The Smeg Tour

Background

The Smeg Tour recognises and rewards architects for their contribution to architectural design, in conjunction with their support of Smeg. The Smeg Tour provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for four (4) winners to attend the Venice Biennale in 2016, to visit the Guido Canali-designed Smeg headquarters in Guastalla and to network with senior members of the profession.

The prize

There are four (4) prize packages to be won in total

  • Each winning project may receive up to a maximum of two (2) places on the Smeg Tour and each person nominated for that winning project will receive one (1) place on the Tour
  • Each prize package consists of:
    • All airport transfers
    • Return, economy domestic air transfers if necessary, and return, economy flights from the winner’s Australian home city to Venice, Italy
    • Three (3) nights’ accommodation for one person in Venice, excluding the Smeg Tour
    • Complimentary Vernissage passes and tickets to all Australian events including Commissioner’s Cocktail Party
    • An invitation to the Smeg Tour, which will visit the Guido Canali-designed Smeg headquarters in Guastalla, as well as sites of architectural, historic and cultural significance

The Brief

You are invited to enter the competition by sharing with us a project where you have designed a residential kitchen utilising Smeg appliances.

Who Can Enter

  • You must be an individual working within an architectural practice, not a company or a practice
  • For the purposes of receiving the prize, you may nominate one (1) other individual for each project submitted. If you want to nominate one (1) other person, both persons nominated must be from the practice that designed the project and who collaborated in the design
  • You do not need to be a member of the Australian Institute of Architects
  • You must be over the age of 18 years old and an Australian citizen or permanent resident

Project eligibility criteria

To be eligible for judging in the competition, a Project entered must:

  • be located in Australia
  • be from a residential project that includes a kitchen design utilising Smeg product – a residential project includes: multi-residential, new build and alterations and additions to existing dwellings
  • have reached practical completion on or after 1st January 2014, but before the date of close of competition on the 31st August 2015

Judging Criteria

The project must include kitchens that have specified Smeg product (should include at least two (2) of the following Smeg appliances: oven, cooktop, range hood, fridge or dishwasher).

Primary criteria: the innovative design and creative use of materials – reflecting the Smeg positioning of technology with style

Secondary criteria: spatial planning including ease of access to appliances, use of natural light and ventilation, interaction with other spaces in the residence

Submission Format

The project must be submitted as a two (2) page A4 continuous PDF with maximum file size of 10MB.

Submission Requirements 

In order for the judges to view your project and consider your entry, you must:

  • complete the online entry form (link to online entry form)
  • upload your submission in the form of a two (2) page A4 continuous PDF including: Up to five (5) images of the project, at least one (1) of which shows the use of the chosen SMEG appliances
  • ensure that the creator of all images used in your submission is correctly and appropriately attributed and you have their permission to use the images
  • Submit a 250 word rationale addressing the judging criteria (see below)
  • Keep the file size of the PDF document to less than 10MB
  • Optional: in your two (2) page A4 continuous PDF, you may also include joinery plans or elevations
  • If your entry is short-listed, you may be required to provide five (5) x high-res Images for further judging and promotional use (you must get permission of the image owner for promotional usage)

How do I enter? Well….it’s simple!

  1. Select one of your projects that you would like to enter, which meets eligibility and submission criteria
  2. Fill out the online entry form
  3. Upload your two (2) page A4 continuous PDF including all relevant information
  4. Submit the online entry form
  5. If entrant is shortlisted they will be asked to provide five (5) high resolution images as separate files for judging purposes

Stages

Competition opens 18th May 2015

  1. Entries close on 31st August 2015
  2. Short list selected 14th September
  3. Winners notified 7th October
  4. Winners announced at National Awards
