Danish architect Dan Stubbergaard founded COBE with Vanessa Miriam Carlow in 2005.

COBE is a progressive and contemporary community of architects that focuses on architecture and design – from buildings to public space, to large scale urban planning.

The name COBE is derived from its founders’ hometowns – Copenhagen and Berlin, which is all the more apt now that COBE works out of both cities. While the two offices develop projects individually, they also share and collaborate on selected projects.

Dan is the creative driving force in the daily work at COBE’s Copenhagen office. He is involved in all phases of the studio’s projects – from sketching to design and project management.

Alongside his architectural practice, Dan teaches at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and lectures internationally on COBE’s current projects.

Since its establishment, COBE has gained international recognition through the realisation of beautiful and innovative projects. For the practice, architecture is not a matter of a certain style or form, but more importantly its adaptability to the local context, its social life and its users.

To create social interaction through the projects, COBE has developed into a community of architects with the capability to approach all scales of architecture from urban planning to buildings and public space. It is these elements combined, that create the physical conditions for people’s lives and their social interaction.

COBE’s approach to architecture is inclusive; with social, practical, economic and environmental issues integrated within the process. Architecture is seen as a process of dialogue and selected experts, across countries and professional fields, are consulted at every stage of the design process.

Although a young practice, COBE has quickly gained an innovative reputation, winning a number of high profile projects and prizes, including the Golden Lion of the 10th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2006 and Scandinavia’s prestigious Nykredit Architecture Prize in 2012.
