Description: Floor Talk and welcome to the 2017 Droga International Architect in Residence, Dr. Alberto Pérez-Gómez, introduced by Foundation Chair, Alec Tzannes, AM. Dr. Pérez-Gómez, Saidye Rosner Bronfman Professor, History of Architecture, McGill University, Montreal, in conversation with Professor Anthony Burke, Head, School of Architecture UTS, and Dr. Adrian Carter, Professor, Abedian School of Architecture, Bond University.

F19—Archi-Tour: Utzon

Description: Discussing the sources of the young Dane’s deepest inspiration, his working methods and influences, this tour will chart the development of Utzon’s ideas and their materialisation in the platform, concrete shells and ceramic skin of Sydney Opera House. It will finish with the recent Opera House refurbishment, and bring you up to date on current works.

Led by architect Eoghan Lewis, founder of the Sydney Architecture Walks and architectural practice Eoghan Lewis Architects.

F01—Open Studio: BVN

Description: An opportunity for delegates to get an insight into one of Australia’s largest architectural practices, widely renowned for award winning design. A guide will introduce delegates to the office, show them around and discuss plans for the studios next iteration. Attendees will be able to view some built and current projects in virtual reality and BVN’s 3D print leaders and in-house model maker will discuss their processes. This open studio includes lunch and there will also be a gift from BVN for all that attend.

Description: Grimshaw have recently moved into a brand new office within the new 333 George St building. The building and office fitout have both been designed by Grimshaw, so the studio visit will be a great opportunity to see first hand the work of the practice. Includes lunch.

F23—ICC Tour + Lunch

Description: Get an exclusive back-of-house tour during DesignBUILD to see the inner workings of this state-of-the-art facility. Expertly guided by Populous’ Global Design Director, Michael Lockwood and Senior Associate, Belinda Goh, this tour offers conference delegates an inside view into both the design and construction of the building. Following the tour, delegates are also invited to a private networking lunch held at DesignBUILD.

F20—Archi-Tour: Sydney’s Spine

Description: A pedestrian artery for twenty thousand years; the ancient walking track from Circular Quay to the fresh water spring known as the Tank Stream is now Sydney’s meandering George Street spine. This tour will focus on the defining urban and architectural elements of George Street including master works by Harry Seidler, Angelo Candalepas, Johnson Pilton Walker and FJMT.

F07a—Sirius Tour with Tao Gofers

Description: Join an hour long tour with architect Tao Gofers and @SaveOurSirius of the Sirius Building – one of Sydney’s great brutalists buildings, and one which has become a touchpoint for the relationship between the profession and the public. Sirius crystallises in a building issues pertaining to our identity, society, culture and politics – and we would like to see it remain on Sydney’s skyline.

Half of the ticket proceeds will be donated to the fighting fund to #SaveOurSirius

F06—Barangaroo South Tour

Description: Walking tour of recently completed buildings in the designed precinct of Barangaroo. Once an open swathe of concrete, the wharf is now a vibrant mixed use precinct. This tour will involve architect-led tours of a number of new projects, as well as a sunset tour of the Barangaroo Headland Park. As the buildings are not yet fully completed, the projects will be viewed externally only.

F22—Building Tour: 10 Wylde Street Potts Point

Description: Receiving a National Architecture Award for Multiple Housing in 2016, 10 Wylde Street is a boutique apartment development that nestles into the hill side at the tip of Potts Point and commands spectacular views of the City and Harbour. Designed by SJB, the building aesthetic makes reference to the architectural heritage of the area and delivers a contemporary interpretation of the local vernacular. Join the architects on a tour of one of the apartments.

Opening Party

This year attendance at the Opening Party is included in the price of individual conference registration (with the exception of day and flexi tickets).

The Party will be held at The Argyle Hotel in one of Australia’s oldest buildings, and is the ultimate Sydney nightlife venue. The venue has a rich historic feel, with a uniquely modern take. Housed in the 1820s Argyle Stores building in the heart of The Rocks, the Argyle retains much of the original heritage-listed structure.

Blending an alluring mix of historic and ultra-modern, The Argyle features high archway entrances, a sandstone cobbled outdoor courtyard and sleek timber flooring and beams.

F25—SONA Buddy Breakfast

Description: SONA + SJB will be hosting a breakfast for SONA members to meet industry professionals and discuss the importance of participating in the conference. Students will be given tips on how to best engage and network with architects from across the nation. Students will also have the opportunity to buddy up with an architect and ask questions they might have about the profession in an intimate and non-intimidating environment in the hope that they will head to conference feeling more informed knowing someone.

Breakfast is provided by SJB and yes, this event is FREE for SONA members attending conference!

Description: As part of the official Fringe program, the Institute and DesignBUILD will be hosting a breakfast with a private tour of the show floor, hosted by the new DesignBUILD Event Manager. Beat the crowds onsite and see the highlights of this award winning event, even before the Conference starts with breakfast to follow the tour.

F26—SONA Inclusion Event

Description: SONA + SJB will be hosting an evening discussion on differences in culture, gender and diversity and how an inclusive studio breeds good architecture. The event will be held at the newly completed Rogersellers showroom at Casba, Waterloo. Students will hear from people in practice who will shed light on standing out and embracing their differences.

Students are asked to bring along their portfolios and CVs as they will be given the opportunity to gain feedback and tips before applying for a job.

F12—Foreshore Walk

Description: A pre-convention walk from Sydney’s MCA to the International Convention Centre. The walk will take conference delegates along the iconic Sydney foreshore – around Circular Quay and the Rocks, under the Harbour Bridge, past Walsh Bay, around the new Barangaroo headland park and then down through Barangaroo and King St Wharf before arriving at the ICC in time for the start of Conference proceedings. The walk will include a quick breakfast stop at Barangaroo (breakfast at own cost).

F21—Archi-Tour: Regeneration and Transformation

Description: This tour is a celebration of the art of governance, an examination of the art of development and an exploration of the gritty, rapidly changing suburbs of Ultimo, Chippendale, and Surry Hills, and includes headline projects by Jean Nouvel, Norman Foster, Durbach Block Jaggers, Frank Gehry and William Smart as well as a number of transformative projects by local heroes Neeson Murcutt, CHROFI, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, Aspect and Silvester Fuller.

F30—Shigeru Ban Exhibition

Description: An exclusive viewing of The inventive work of Shigeru Ban, the Japanese Pritzker Prize laureate’s first Australian exhibition, at the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF). SCAF chairperson and executive director Dr Gene Sherman will give a formal talk to attendees.

F31—Coincidences: An exhibition by John Wardle Architects

Description: Coincidences is an exploration of the work and methodology of John Wardle Architects (JWA) carried out by a series of prominent architectural photographers, an artist and filmmakers. This exhibition interrogates the boundaries between public and private spaces. Can a foyer have the intimacy of a living room? How might a house have the civic atmosphere of a university hall? The exhibition runs from 27 April through to 26 May at the Tin Sheds Gallery. Join JWA for a floor talk with coffee.

F18—Microbrewery Walking Tour

Description: This behind the scenes microbrewery tour of Marrickville will commence at The Grifter Brewing Co. After some delicious craft beer tasting and a tour of the brewery we will walk to The Henson, a pub renowned for its excellent food and extensive craft beer offering. The walking tour will conclude at the Batch Brewing Co. Brewing from a converted smash repair shop, this microbrewery is referred to as the local beer-nerd nirvana. Ticket price includes the tastings and brewery tours at The Grifter and Batch along with lunch at the Henson.

Participate! – Hosted by Parlour and GET

Description: The last five years have seen an enormous groundswell in research, advocacy and activism for gender equity. What do the next five years hold?

Please join us in Sydney at Participate! to help assess what has been achieved so far and to chart what we can all do next – together and individually, from the bottom up, the top down, and everything in between. This workshop will feature short presentations from GET, Parlour, the National Committee for Gender Equity, and the Architects Champions of Change, before breaking into parallel workshops to explore broad strategies for the next five years. A panel discussion wraps up the afternoon, followed by drinks hosted by Parlour Partner AWS.
