Architects do it with Models: KNAUF Design Competition
As part of Student Congress in July, The Institute, in collaboration with Knauf, conducted a design and build competition for students: Architects do it with models. The competition offered students the chance to design the SONA pop up store , by creating a model to enter the competition, with the winner building it for use at the congress, displaying SONA merchandise for students to purchase during congress. The winning team’s solution, Flip2, was an innovative, modular stand that demonstrated flexibility in assemblage and arrangement, as well as the aesthetic value of function. It was during the build process that the learning value of the activity was truly uncovered. The winning team grappled with material selection, having to revise the model for ease of construction but maintaining the design aesthetic as well as managing suppliers, resources and technical support within a budget. Their ability to think on their feet and problem solve was outstanding. The competition would not have been possible without the support of Knauf, who helped fund the competition, provided material and most importantly technical advice as to how best to collaborate and innovate in order to achieve an outcome. Congratulations once again to the Lawson Heah, Edward Yeeks and Rebecca Yip for their winning design.
