“Where to now?” Local VIC SONA event review
SJB in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Chapter and SONA, hosted an industry night “Where to now?” at SJB’s new studio in Oliver Lane Melbourne. Over forty students and practicing architects gathered on Wednesday for an informal workshop to talk about the industry, share insight into entering the design profession and receive feedback on their student work.
The students from several Universities listened to advice about the realities they may face upon completion of their architecture degrees and possible challenges when entering the profession.
Michael Bialek opened the night with a brief history of SJB and its new Oliver Lane studio. Thomas McKenzie, Principal of Thomas Winwood Architecture and Chair of EmAGN followed, giving his perspective on the continual learning processes one goes through from the first day their career begins.
Georgie Brice of Bespoke Careers spoke to the students about what employers look for when graduates enter the workforce, and how to stand out during the application process. Maria Danos, who commenced her career at SJB 20 years ago and now runs her own practice, spoke to the students on the differences between small, medium and large practices; the benefits and the disadvantages of each and how each can influence your career.
Our up and coming designers then broke off in a ‘speed-dating style’ portfolio-review session, where they each had 10 minute cycles with practitioners to discuss their work and ask for feedback or advice from the practicing architects.
Thank you to our sponsors K-Five and Kinnarps and to everyone else who contributed to the successful collaboration of the event.
