Macquarie Point Development Corporation Office Refurbishment- Tim Penny Architecture + interiors

Project summary

In June, 2012, at the chilly TasRail operational site off Evans St in Hobart, the former Infrastructure Minister David O’Byrne announced the successful securing of funds to remediate and redevelop Macquarie Point, the site formerly considered for a relocated Royal Hobart Hospital. The current building works involve the recycling and redevelopment of the former TasRail barracks to accommodate offices for the newly constituted Macquarie Point Development Corporation. The buildings were vacated by TasRail in preparation for their relocation to the Brighton Transport Hub. The design gives the building a new Davey Street address and provides contemporary, sustainable office space. The design intent was to convey a sense of the industrial context, with the use of materials and finishes, such as exposed concrete, Corten, Danpalon with integrated LED lights, industrial sliding doors and a subtle use of subspaces, whilst retaining large, open-plan offices. Open-plan work, quiet meeting rooms and a boardroom provide the Corporation with a range of spaces to suit the organisation.
