T@T: People Making Cities

Tuesday 3 March 6:00pm for 6:30pm

Introduction: Ksenia Totoeva from Lazhnimmo
Curator: DARCH – Emerging Architects and Graduates Committee
Speakers:  Ryan Reynolds from Gap Filler, Marni Jackson from City of Sydney’s Creative City Sydney  and John O’Callaghan from JOC Consulting

Major urban renewal projects challenge the fabric of our cities. They are the manifested negotiation between the often competing political and economic forces that drive development and the needs of communities. This February marks 4 years since the Christchurch earthquake; a natural disaster that has placed the city at the forefront of a global debate about urban renewal. While government authorities began the slow task of rebuilding, several community initiatives sprung up in response to a demand for urgent intervention to sustain city activity and vibrancy. The need for these responses bore out organizations such as Gap Filler and Life in Vacant Spaces who saw vacant sites activated by temporary creative projects and have become synonymous with a new DIY creative movement that sits – at times uneasily – alongside the massive government master plan.

Dr Ryan Reynolds, co-founder of Gap Filler, discusses the role of community action, performance and creativity in making cities.

He is joined by City of Sydney Cultural Projects Manager and former manager of Renew Newcastle, Marni Jackson and John O’Callaghan, Director of JOC Consulting and Urban Planner.
