2012

In their inaugural year, twelve projects were submitted for the International Chapter Architecture Awards, across three categories. Four projects were shortlisted, with the Jørn Utzon Award for International Architecture awarded to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki by FJMT and Archimedia in association.

Jury

James Brearley RAIA (Chair)

James is adjunct professor of architecture at RMIT Melbourne. He opened his Shanghai studio BAU (Brearley Architects + Urbanists) with partner Fang Qun in 2001. Experienced with a wide scope of projects; they are committed to the development and progression of design through teaching, competitions, workshops and academic research.

They are known for their serious collaboration with artists and their dedication to issues of environmental sustainability. Brearley’s work is culturally sensitive and site specific. Ideas are explored through functional program, form and surface.

 

Hank Koning FRAIA

Hank Koning, together with fellow Australian Julie Eizenberg, established Koning Eizenberg Architecture in Santa Monica California in 1981. Koning Eizenberg has earned more than 70 awards for their projects, including 25 AIA awards, and was named the 2009 AIA California Firm of the Year.

Hank graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1977 and worked in the office of Max May before leaving Australia to pursue a Masters of Architecture II at UCLA. Upon graduation in 1981, he worked briefly for Charles Moore and the Urban Innovations Group before establishing his own firm. Hank has had the pleasure of teaching at a number of universities including Harvard, Yale, UCLA, University of British Columbia, University of Hong Kong and the University of Melbourne.

Currently, Hank serves as Chair of the Santa Monica Planning Commission, charged with shaping the future development of the city. He is a fellow of both the Australian Institute of Architects and the American institute of Architects. Hank is also a member of the International Committee.

 

Jonathan Mills

Jonathan Mills, the Australian Director of the Edinburgh International Festival, set up home in the UK four years ago. Born in Sydney, Jonathan studied architecture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) focusing on acoustic design. He graduated in music from the University of Sydney, where he specialised in composition with Peter Sculthorpe before going on to become Artistic Director of the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Melbourne Federation Festival, the Melbourne Millennium Eve celebrations and the Brisbane Biennial International Music Festival.

In parallel, Jonathan has nurtured a career as a musician and composer, creating a series of modern operas. He received the coveted Prix Italia for his Sandakan Threnody solo tenor, choir and orchestra in 2005.
