Greetings to all International Institute members around the world.
It is with great pleasure that we announce and welcome our newly appointed International Chapter Councillor, Nick Derickx from Singapore. Nick is a most enthusiastic and highly qualified Australian architect who will bring new energy and enthusiasm to the Chapter. He has filled a casual vacancy on Chapter Councillor which resulted from Justin Hill’s successful election to the National Council and the Institute Board, earlier this year.
Now that we are fully recognised as a Chapter, our structure and election cycle is the same as all Australian Chapters. What this means is that each year members elect five (5) out of 10 Councillors. Starting in this election round and then every two (2) years, members will also elect a Chapter Council Chair (President). The five Councillors who will stay on to complete their current two year term are: Annelise Tiller; Vui Choong; Hank Koning; Grant Marani; and Nick Derickx. Councillors who are completing their two (2) year term are David Teh; Janine Campbell; Robert (Bob) Nation; Fiona Nixon; and Paul Logsdon.
I wholeheartedly encourage all eligible international members to consider expressing their interest in joining Chapter Council to represent their particular country or region. Eligible members can participate either by nominating themselves, nominating another member or by voting for a candidate. Please keep an eye out for the formal notification (coming soon) announcing that nominations for Chapter Council are open.
I also wish to take this opportunity to thank Justin for his hard work whilst on the International Area Committee and for his contribution in getting us elevated to a recognised Chapter. We look forward to working with him in both his National Council and Board roles, to effectively advance and support Australian architecture and Australian architects working overseas as well as within Australia.
On other business we are gearing up a notch on the next Boarding Pass event, scheduled for 14 November 2018 during Dubai Design Week. This member networking event will be held at the Dubai Design Centre and we are most grateful for the kind support and partnership offered by Schiavello in providing the venue and catering for this event. We will shortly be sending out invitations to International members living in the Middle East Region, and we encourage members, professional colleagues and practices to join us for an evening that will feature a PechaKucha presentation. If you are interested in joining the panel of PechaKucha presenters, please contact Annelise Tiller at intcouncillor@architecture.com.au for further details and to confirm your interest. There will be a maximum of six (6) PechaKucha presentations on the night.
In other news, the International Chapter website has recently been updated and improved and thanks to Chapter Councillors Janine Campbell and Fiona Nixon, we have become more active in the social media space – Instagram and Facebook. We are also improving our regular member communication with the publishing of this monthly E-News and we welcome contributions from members. If you have any interesting articles, photographs, or information on regional events that would be of interest to members, please forward to international@architecture.com.au and we can share the information with members via our E-News.
Many thanks and kind regards,
Paul Logsdon FRAIA
