From the Chapter Chair

Seasonal Greetings to all AIA International members around the world.

Our Dubai Boarding Pass event held on 14 November, during the 2018 Dubai Design Week festivities, was well attended and we extend a warm thank you to our event partners Schiavello International and OFIS, for hosting another UAE member and colleague’s networking event.  The evening included Pecha-Kucha presentations from Schiavello, Edge Design, GHD, BHNS and Samantha Cotterell –  Design Director Expo 2020 Dubai. The AIA National Architecture Awards, International category winners  were also featured – The Jørn Utzon Award – Australian Embassy Bangkok by BVN (Thailand) and the Australian Award – School-in-a-Box by Stephen Collier Architects (PNG), with photography by John Gollings (W.J. Mitchell Award recipient 2013).  International Chapter Boarding Pass events being planned for 2019 include Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and New York – watch E-News for further updates in the new year.

It is both pleasing and most encouraging to see that the International Chapter Council elections have 11 fully supported nominations from around the world for five (5) vacant Chapter Councillor positions, and two fully supported nominations from exceptional candidates for the position of Chapter Chair – good luck and best wishes to all candidates. We understand the Institute will contact successful candidates in mid-January 2019, with all election results for elected and uncontested roles to be announced to the wider membership, shortly thereafter.  Members who are eligible to vote in the elections are: Member Level 1FellowsLife FellowsAffiliate Level 1 and Graduates.  Please visit the Australian Institute of Architects’ Online International Council Voting portal to cast your vote.

Plans are already well underway for the 2019 International Chapter Architecture Awards with entries now open. Members have until 15 March 2019 to register and submit their entries.  For further information about the 2019 Awards program please visit the website.

The 2019 Awards program will include a new award – the International Chapter Emerging Architects Prize. This Prize will recognise an individual emerging architect or architectural collaboration’s contribution to architecture practice, education, design excellence and community involvement, which advances the professions standing in the public arena. The prize will be open to international chapter members of the Institute. Further information and entry criteria will be released in early 2019.

On behalf of the Internaitonal Chapter Council I would like to extend my best wishes to all over the Festive Season and if you would like to stay in touch with Chapter activities please visit our Instagram and FaceBook social media channels.

Many thanks and kind regards,
