“We are delighted that the annual Cinecity Architectural Film Competition will be screened as part of the Australia Institute of Architects Conference Events program, we are intrigued to see how the films will explore the Conference Theme: Making.” – the Creative Directors

In a fringe event aligned with the 2014 Australian Institute of Architects National Conference, Cinecity Architectural Film Project invites submissions of local and international 60 second un-edited architectural films which explore the Conference Directors theme: MAKING. This theme explore ideas about making architecture, which extend upon traditional practice approaches, challenging relationships between architecture and the cultural, the economic, the social and the political. The Conference subthemes are: making culture: to process, making life: to transform, making connections: to engage and making impact: to act.

30 shortlisted films, which explore the conference theme and adhere to the Cinecity submission format, will be
selected by the curators and put forward to the panel of esteemed judges. Each judge will choose and score their top film; signed certificates will be issued to each judges first choice, with an overall first place prize of $1000 AUD.

The deadline for entries is 4th April 2014 5pm AEST. Click here for more information.

During October Sam and Helen were on the road, travelling to South East Asia to meet architects and visit an amazing range of projects. It was an endless journey of driving around in an impressive selection of Landrover Defenders – the architect’s car of choice in this part of the world.

First stop: Kuala Lumpur, where we were hosted by Kevin Mark Low, who we had met during his recent roadshow around Australia. We were staying in Bangsar, the ‘Surry Hills of KL’, in the architect’s neighbourhood full of small interventions that provided a sampler of current experiments. Our home for four days was Sekeping Tenggiri, a mini hotel designed by Sek San Ng, one of the speakers for the conference. Sek San is a landscape architect and engineer who makes interesting new environments at a range of different scales. He takes the building out of architecture and replaces it with landscape, and weathered time! While in KL, Kevin introduced us to several interesting architects, and we were particularly delighted to meet Wen Hsia and BC Ang of WHBC, who spent the day taking us to see several of their projects, including the beautifully quirky Dog Hotel and Durian Shed for an Australian pro-golfer.

Next we went to the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Singapore, which should perhaps be called the World Australian Festival as Aussies made up one sixth of the entries, (represented by a great contingent from around the country). WAF provided an opportunity to meet many architects from around the world, particularly Vo Trong Nghia who was presenting projects in several categories following his win for both the school and house catagories at the World Architecture Festival. We were joined in Singapore by Elizabeth Watson-Brown, who will be the host and anchor for the MAKING LIFE sessions of Making 2014. She introduced us to Belinda Huang from ARC studios, the architects of the very impressive Pinnacle at Duxton housing project. The highlight for most of us was visiting WOHA’s Parkroyal on Pickering hotel, where many of the Australian crew were staying. We are very excited to have WOHA’s Richard Hassell, a Perth local, on the program for Making 2014.

Jakarta was the final destination, and it was a complete thrill to meet Andra Matin in his own house in Southern Jakarta, along with his friend and collaborator Avianti Armand. Andra’s work is gaining international attention, and his role in developing a strong architectural community and culture in the post Suharto era is widely heralded. We were also very privileged to be hosted by Imelda Akmal and Sonny Sandjaya, the publishers of Archinesia and a series of recent books on contemporary Indonesian architecture, and to meet with Adi Purnomi, Wilis Kusuma and Gregorius Supie of D’Assocaites.

The conversation of ‘making’ is central to practices across SE Asia, both through the collaboration between architects and contractors and also through the cultural explorations that are central to many contemporary projects. We are really looking forward to returning the hospitality to all when they visit Perth in May 2014.
