How would Nature solve sustainable design challenges in Melbourne?

October 31 @ 10:00 am – 12:30 pm | $30-$50 Participants will collaborate to explore strategies from Nature inspiring solutions to design challenges. This is the second session in our three-part Biomimicry themed series. Through a series of design exercises, participants will work collaboratively to explore strategies from Nature that can inspire solutions to challenges faced in Melbourne. Participants will practice finding natural models to meet specific functions and learn how deep patterns found in Nature can be applied to evaluate sustainable design outcomes. What can we learn from hummingbirds about evolved communications? What can clams teach us about joining systems? How do humpback whales inspire wind turbine design? This event will be one of a trilogy being presented by the Australian Institute of Architects, DesignInc and Biomimicry Swarm Australia themed around Biomimicry. The other events in this series are a moderated panel discussion with Melbourne’s leading thinkers on the Ethos of Sustainability: Raising the Green Bar: How can Melbourne learn from nature? (29/10/14) and a Reconnection deep time walk: Biomimicry Nature Walk through Time (1/11/14). BiomimicrySwarm Australia is a collective seeking to create a buzz about biomimicry’s potential to inspire innovation by asking “how would nature do that?” We humbly seek to better understand the organisms that call Australia home, and to learn from them how to better adapt to life in this beautiful, challenging country. With our three events in MA|A and Melbourne Knowledge Week, our aim is to attract, connect and inspire a diverse community interested in the elegant survival strategies Nature has evolved over 3.8 billion years. This event is part of Melbourne Knowledge Week 27 October – 2 November 2014, proudly presented by the City of Melbourne. World Architecture Day Celebration

October 31 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm | Free – $40 The Australian Institute of Architects Vic Chapter and Member Services Committee will host a World Architecture Day (WAD) celebration on the Friday evening within MA|A.
