{"id":18749,"date":"2018-04-03T15:34:01","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T05:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/?p=18749"},"modified":"2018-04-03T15:38:01","modified_gmt":"2018-04-03T05:38:01","slug":"news-from-the-act-sustainability-committee-response-to-discussion-paper-on-act-climate-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/news-from-the-act-sustainability-committee-response-to-discussion-paper-on-act-climate-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"News from the ACT Sustainability Committee\u2026 Response to Discussion Paper on ACT Climate Strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gallery-post-container\"><h1 class=\"gallery-post-title\"><\/h1><div class=\"gallery-post-thumbs\"><\/div><div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div><div class=\"gallery-post-content\"><h4 class=\"h4\"><strong>News from the ACT Sustainability Committee.<\/strong><br \/>\r\n<strong>Response to Discussion Paper on ACT Climate Strategy<\/strong><\/h4><br \/>\r\nDuring 2017, the ACT Government conducted three stakeholder meetings dealing with the development of strategy for greenhouse gas reduction policy from 2020 \u2013 2050.\u00a0 The stated goal of the government is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, with interim targets being set for 2025, 2030, 2040 and 2045.\u00a0 Members from the Sustainability Committee represented the Institute at these meetings, which were, on the whole, very productive.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nThe second stage of the ACT Climate Action Plan will see stationary power reduced to a net zero emissions level by 2020, thus eliminating the single largest emissions source \u2013 electricity generation \u2013 from the mix of emissions-production activities in the ACT.\u00a0 This has been largely achieved by commissioning dedicated renewable energy generation facilities &#8211; wind power resources located in South Australia and local solar farms located in the southern parts of the Territory at Royalla and Hume \u2013 and integrating these into the local supply network.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nThe task for the immediate future will be to address the remaining areas where the ACT still has a high emissions profile, these being transport (public and private), gas use and waste generation.\u00a0 The Sustainability Committee, in cooperation with the Planning Committee, are currently working on a response to the Discussion Paper <u>ACT\u2019s Climate Strategy To A Net Zero Emissions Territory.<\/u><br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nThe Building Industry, and Design Professions in particular, have both an opportunity and responsibility to contribute to the emissions reduction strategy in the coming years and decades.\u00a0 Many decisions we take on a day-to-day basis have a direct effect on gas use, waste production and transport emissions.\u00a0 The Sustainability Committee would welcome any contributions from members with ideas about meeting the targets.\u00a0 Background information, including technical modelling of possible pathways,\u00a0 is available from the ACT Government &lt;Your Say&gt; website (www.yoursay. act.gov.au).\u00a0 Submissions close on April 9<sup>th<\/sup>.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nIn closing, don\u2019t forget this year\u2019s Solar House Day, which has been confirmed for the 29<sup>th<\/sup> July, with the seminar taking place on 25<sup>th<\/sup> July.\u00a0 Please give some consideration to participating in this valuable public education event.\u00a0 It only takes an hour or two of your client\u2019s time and is generally great fun for all involved.\u00a0 We are currently looking for homes to feature in this upcoming 2018 Tour, so please put any and all projects forward for consideration.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18754\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/04\/Sustainability-image.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"721\" height=\"409\" \/><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News from the ACT Sustainability Committee.
