{"id":20198,"date":"2018-09-14T09:59:01","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T23:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/?p=20198"},"modified":"2019-07-15T14:42:26","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T04:42:26","slug":"inventiveness-sophistication-shine-in-national-architecture-awards-shortlist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/inventiveness-sophistication-shine-in-national-architecture-awards-shortlist\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Inventiveness, sophistication\u2019 shine in National Architecture Awards shortlist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The shortlist for the coveted Australian Institute of Architects\u2019 National Architecture Awards has been <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/awards-2018\/shortlist\/\">released<\/a>, chosen from 975 projects across 14 categories nationally and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Following the Chapter Architecture Awards announcements earlier this year, 203 projects were deemed eligible for national judging, with a shortlist of 69 announced today.<\/p>\n<p>Jury chair and Immediate Past President Richard Kirk described the awards as one of the Institute\u2019s most important advocacy programs, acknowledging and celebrating the transformative capacity of the profession in Australian communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Each project visit was always an experience of delight and surprise, and we were continually reminded how project images can never be a substitute for experiencing the building itself,\u2019 Kirk said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Furthermore, these visits provided a unique experience made all the richer by the opportunity to engage with the architects and in almost all instances their clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018On behalf of the jury and the Institute I thank all the architects and their clients for so generously welcoming us and providing us with that rare access into what are generally private places.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Kirk said the jury was impressed by the sustainability initiatives being adopted by Australian architects and a \u2018growing sophistication and confident inventiveness\u2019 used in their implementation.<\/p>\n<p>He said entries in the public architecture and multi-residential housing categories were of particular note in 2018, \u2018formidable\u2019 projects diverse in scale, function and complexity.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This national overview provided an opportunity to reflect on how Australia\u2019s vastly different landscapes, urban conditions and economic circumstances influence the work we saw,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The jury was aware that in comparing work with such differences in location, complexity or budget it was important for there to be consensus of view as to how each project responded to the criteria.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We were impressed by these projects that established new design benchmarks that can be of value to the broader community and through that influence see a positive change resonate in our built environment.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Kirk was joined on the jury by Jill Garner, Katelin Butler, Charles Wright and Kevin O\u2019Brien.<\/p>\n<p>Launching on World Architecture Day, Monday 1 October, the annual People\u2019s Choice Award will once again give members of the public the opportunity to vote for their favourite residential project from the shortlist.<\/p>\n<p>The winners will be announced at the <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/awards-2018\/\">National Architecture Awards ceremony<\/a> in Melbourne on Thursday 1 November.<\/p>\n<p>Full shortlist:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commercial Architecture<\/strong> (7)<\/p>\n<p>Australian Federal Police Forensics and Data Centre by HASSELL (ACT)<br \/>\nBarangaroo House by Collins and Turner (NSW)<br \/>\nBarwon Water by GHDWoodhead (VIC)<br \/>\nInternational House Sydney by Tzannes (NSW)<br \/>\nkrakani lumi by Taylor and Hinds Architects with the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania (TAS)<br \/>\nMac 01 by Circa Morris-Nunn Architects (TAS)<br \/>\nThe Darling Building by Williams Burton Leopardi (SA)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Educational Architecture<\/strong> (6)<\/p>\n<p>Highgate Primary School New Teaching Building by iredale pedersen hook architects (WA)<br \/>\nMacquarie University Incubator by Architectus (NSW)<br \/>\nMonash University Learning and Teaching Building by John Wardle Architects (VIC)<br \/>\nNew Academic Street, RMIT University by Lyons with NMBW Architecture Studio, Harrison and White, MvS Architects and Maddison Architects (VIC)<br \/>\nThe Science Place by HASSELL (QLD)<br \/>\nVictorian College of the Arts former Mounted Police Stables by Kerstin Thompson Architects (VIC)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enduring Architecture<\/strong> (4)<\/p>\n<p>Allendale Square by Cameron Chisholm and Nicol (WA)<br \/>\nBOWALI Visitor Centre, Kakadu by Troppo Architects in association with Glenn Murcutt and Associates (NT)<br \/>\nSt Thomas Aquinas Church, Charnwood by Mitchell\/Guirgola and Thorp Architects (ACT)<br \/>\nTownsville Courts of Law &#8211;
