{"id":21265,"date":"2019-02-11T10:30:06","date_gmt":"2019-02-10T23:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/?p=21265"},"modified":"2019-02-11T10:30:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-10T23:30:06","slug":"pace-of-progress-to-improve-building-safety-too-slow-for-community-comfort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/pace-of-progress-to-improve-building-safety-too-slow-for-community-comfort\/","title":{"rendered":"Pace of progress to improve building safety too slow for community comfort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The outcomes from Friday\u2019s Building Minister\u2019s Forum will fall short of community expectations when it comes to ensuring Australians\u2019 safety, according to the Australian Institute of Architects.<\/p>\n<p>National President Clare Cousins, who represented the architectural profession at the meeting, said the slow pace of progress on such a grave issue was of serious concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The blaze at Melbourne\u2019s Neo200 earlier this week was a stark reminder of what\u2019s at stake and the immediacy of the danger posed,\u2019 Ms Cousins said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Governments have an opportunity and responsibility, having identified the danger and risk posed by certain types of flammable cladding, to do something about it before any lives are lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Sadly it is an opportunity they appear to be squandering.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A full year since receiving the Shergold-Weir report, <em>Building Confidence<\/em>, all we have is a commitment to release a \u201cjoint implementation plan\u201d addressing its recommendations by the end of this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The biggest milestone achieved today was an \u201cin principle\u201d agreement &#8211; subject to no less than five separate caveats &#8211; to a national ban on the unsafe use of combustible cladding in new construction.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This is unacceptable and fails even the most basic test of common sense. Prohibiting any further installation of such products, without any equivocation, should have been the starting point.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Shergold-Weir report, <em>Building Confidence<\/em>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Committees\/Senate\/Economics\/Non-conforming45th\/Interim_report_cladding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Economics References Committee<\/a> inquiry into non-conforming building products sets out a clear and sensible path to reform that has been backed by industry. There is no reason to continue to delay implementation any longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There is no room to prevaricate when lives are at stake, it is as simple as that.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Institute was supportive of proposed changes to the National Construction Code and the focus on ensuring compliance with it.<\/p>\n<p>Measures to improve education to lift the competency of building practitioners were also welcome but should go further to properly address issues identified with product substitution.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute has consistently advocated for reforms that would prevent non-registered and unqualified practitioners overturning product specifications and other decisions of qualified, registered professionals like architects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The outcomes from Friday\u2019s Building Minister\u2019s Forum will fall short of community expectations when it comes to ensuring Australians\u2019 safety, according to the Australian Institute of Architects.
