Despite increasing numbers of\nwomen in the workforce, inequality remains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>women\nrepresent 50.8% of the general population but only 31% of the architectural\nworkforce;<\/li><li>from the\nages of 25-40 the number of men in the profession remains stable whilst the\nnumbers on women decrease by 50% &#8211; there are many reasons for this, however the\nmost sobering static is that the next decade 40-50 age group: instead of\nbottoming out, this trend continues reducing by another 50%;<\/li><li>more than\n77% of women are employees rather than owners;<\/li><li>the gender\npay gap persists generally across the board, however, the 25\u201329 age group has\nnear equal numbers of women and men participating with similar levels of\nexperience and yet a gender pay gap of 5.2% exists.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nInstitute\u2019s National Gender Equity Policy recognises that, \u2018many systemic,\noften unintended and largely invisible effects continue to impact on the\nparticipation and progression of women within the Australian workforce, and\nspecifically within the architecture profession.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over\nthe last 15 years statistics suggest that there have been some incremental\nimprovements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n<em>Parlour<\/em><em> <\/em><em>Census Report<\/em><em> 2001\u20132016:\nWomen in Architecture <\/em><em>in Australia<\/em> maps\ncomparative statistics from 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016 and despite the inequity,\nthere has been incremental improvement over each census period: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>women are increasing their proportion of the architectural workforce, and are increasingly owners of architectural practices;<\/li><li>the proportion of women becoming registered is closer to their graduation rate;<\/li><li>from 2011 to 2016 there was equitable attrition of men and women from architecture for those aged over forty;<\/li><li>while a long-hour culture is still prevalent in the architecture profession, particularly for men, there has been an easing off in recorded working hours since the 2001 census.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read the report <a href=\"https:\/\/archiparlour.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Parlour_Census_Report_Final.pdf\">here<strong>.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\nwe still have a long way to go to achieve equity. So, what can we do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>call out\nunacceptable behaviour and support those around you who do also;<\/li><li>remove the\npay gap;<\/li><li>create\nflexible workplaces supporting each employee\u2019s diverse situation;<\/li><li>reduce the\npropensity for long hours and provide flexibility and opportunities for part\ntime work;<\/li><li>make work\nmeaningful for all whether full time or part time;<\/li><li>provide\nmentoring and support for women towards registration and into leadership\npositions;<\/li><li>provide\nopportunities and pathways for career progression for all;<\/li><li>get involved\nwith your local Institute Chapter Committee for Gender Equity;<\/li><li>apply the Insitute\u2019s\nGender Equity Policy to your practice;<\/li><li>nominate a\npractitioner for the Paula Whitman-Leadership in Gender Equity Prize;<\/li><li>offer the Institute\u2019s\nParental Leave &#8211; Special Circumstances Membership to employers on parental leave;<\/li><li>get involved\nwith Male Champions for Change; <\/li><li>support the\nFindlay Project locally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nInstitute has a National Committee for Gender Equity if you would like to learn\nmore about this issue.
