Photo by Brett Boardman.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>21 March<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Maitland Riverlink by CHROFI\nArchitects with McGregor Coxall has emerged as the preeminent project in this\nyear\u2019s Newcastle Architecture Awards, collecting a swathe of honours including\nthe prestigious Jury Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\npublic building provides a gateway uniting two key aspects of Maitland\u2019s key\nidentity for the first time \u2013 its architecturally rich High Street and the\nenvironmental amenity of the Hunter River. It supports revitalisation of the\ncentral business precinct and creates a \u2018public living room\u2019 for locals and\ntourists to enjoy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Impressed with its elegant simplicity,\nwhich feels like it is just \u2018meant to be\u2019, the jury also recognised the project\u2019s achievements\nwith the Award for Public Architecture and the Award for Urban Design. \u2018The architecture\nhas a strong civic presence in a street full of historic buildings and is a\nlandmark when viewed from the river\u2026It will no doubt be the catalyst for further revitalisation of\nthis dynamic regional community.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two other\ncivic projects \u2013 both by EJE Architecture \u2013 took out the Award for Heritage\nArchitecture: The\nNewcastle Signal Box and The Station. SHAC also had a double-win with their St\nPius X High School Library, which received both the Award for Educational\nArchitecture and the COLORBOND\u00ae Award for Steel Architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five outstanding residential projects earned awards and\ncommendations. Austin Maynard Architects\u2019 expertly crafted and playful\nGreenacres won the Award for Residential Architecture \u2013 Houses (New), while\nCKDS Architecture\u2019s flexible and contextually responsive project The Edge\nearned the Award for Residential Architecture \u2013 Multiple Housing. The Award for\nSustainable Architecture went to True North Architects for the Graham Whiteing\nResidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The jury also recognised readiness to work across design disciplines\nand in close association with building trades to deliver strong outcomes in the\ncase of the winner of the Award for Interior Architecture, Derive Architecture\n&amp; Design\u2019s Ginger Megs X project, which cleverly transforms a late 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century\ntheatre into a bar and restaurant<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jury chair Georgina Wilson of Georgina Wilson Architect said this\nyear\u2019s entries are \u2018a testament to the local architects and community\u2026 It was\nwonderful to witness the energy, commitment and ambition of the community\ntowards achieving great imaginative outcomes for the built environment of this\narea.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSW Chapter President Kathlyn Loseby concurred with Ms Wilson that the region is emerging as an inspiring example of a continuously rejuvenating and dynamically evolving built environment. \u2018Greater Newcastle will continue to be an exciting place to watch into the future.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In\ntotal the jury bestowed 14 awards and commendations. <\/em><em>The\nInstitute congratulates all the practices that participated in the 2019 Newcastle\nArchitecture Awards program and thanks this year\u2019s jurors, who contributed\ntheir time and expertise with great generosity<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NOTES TO THE EDITOR:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High resolution images and promotional summaries are available for\ndownload here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/sh\/7blggohx16p55je\/AAAuppBvSiljO2w9WKrbXjl2a?dl=0\">https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/sh\/7blggohx16p55je\/AAAuppBvSiljO2w9WKrbXjl2a?dl=0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nNational Architecture Awards and respective state and territory Architecture\nAwards programs are run by the Australian Institute of Architects.
