provide and the fees for those services.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">These details are important at all scales of practice.\u00a0 This is demonstrated in the findings of the Lacrosse Building case, where three of the consultants on the project were held responsible largely due to inadequate definition of what services were included and, more importantly, what services they would not provide.\u00a0 These consultants\u2019 contract did not exclude services relating to monitoring compliance of construction that they could not reasonably be expected to inspect.\u00a0 The architect\u2019s argument that they had acted within commonly expected parameters for a design construct project and that this type of service was excluded in the specification was not accepted by the court.<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\">So, what can we take from these experiences?\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"text-indent: -18.0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-weight: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Always have a written agreement with your client.\u00a0 This can be a proforma Client Architect Agreement, a contract or a letter.\u00a0 If the agreement is one prepared by a third party always get it reviewed by your insurer and a lawyer prior to signing.<\/p><p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"text-indent: -18.0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-weight: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Make sure that you are clear who your client is at each stage of a project and that the agreement is suitable for this procurement model.<\/p><p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"text-indent: -18.0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-weight: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->Don\u2019t rely on standard construction industry practice \u2013 because it\u2019s often not standard.\u00a0 Architects operate in a complex and varied context.\u00a0 Be clear about what you will and won\u2019t do and definitions of technical language where interpretation may be possible.\u00a0 For example, the level of documentation provided at building rules consent varies between architects, so make sure the extent of documentation that you are going to provide is defined.<\/p><p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"text-indent: -18.0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1;\"><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\">\u00b7<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal;
