Photo: Matthew Momberger<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Announced today at\nthe Australian Institute of Architects\u2019 National Conference, the directors of Los\nAngeles-based Koning Eizenberg were lauded for their service to the profession\nthrough social outcomes combined with design excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hank Koning FRAIA\nand Julie Eizenberg RAIA have worked on affordable housing, education and civic\nprojects, often in underprivileged communities, for almost four decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their\ncommunity-first design ethos has resulted in landmark buildings including the\nSimone Hotel and 28<sup>th<\/sup> St Apartments that offer supportive housing in\nLos Angeles and community buildings like&nbsp;the Children\u2019s Museum of\nPittsburgh in Pennsylvania, and Pico Branch Library in Santa Monica. The\nrecently completed Geffen Academy at UCLA offers a new secondary school paradigm\nand the upcoming Student Pavilion at the University of Melbourne will be the\nfirm\u2019s first project&nbsp;in Australia. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jury has described their work as having \u2018an\negalitarian generosity of light, scale and air, all imbued with Australian congeniality\nand wit\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Their efforts\nhave transformed the lives of those they have touched \u2013 by providing meaningful\nand respectful homes, they have also brought these communities into the\nspotlight so that other firms may now consider designing for them a worthwhile\npursuit,\u2019 the citation said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Institute Immediate Past National President Clare\nCousins paid tribute to Mr Koning and Ms Eizenberg for the high quality of\ntheir work, built on their social beliefs and strong principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Throughout their careers and long before it was\nmainstream, Hank and Julie worked relentlessly to improve social and community\noutcomes through effective design,\u2019 Ms Cousins said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Working mainly in areas of need, Hank and Julie\ncreated appropriate and respectful homes for people who were not widely\nconsidered in the design world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018They took on complex and difficult challenges\nand now have a legacy of meaningful projects that have transformed individuals\u2019\nlives and the communities around them.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Institute\u2019s Gold Medal recognises the\ndistinguished service of architects who have designed or developed buildings of\ndistinction and advanced the cause of architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Koning and Eizenberg completed their initial\narchitecture studies at the University of Melbourne, before moving to the US in\n1979 for graduate study at the University of California, Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On their graduation in 1981 they established\nKoning Eizenberg in Santa Monica and started undertaking projects that\nchallenged the notion of what social housing and educational buildings could be.\nTogether they built a practice that supports the design of sustainable\nneighbourhoods through the creation of schools, housing, and civic buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their work is underpinned by their belief in\nsocial interaction and its benefit on daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Cousins said the work and ethos of Mr Koning\nand Ms Eizenberg had inspired subsequent generations of Australian and\ninternational architects to work on projects of social value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Koning and Ms Eizenberg also advocated for\nimproved planning and engagement processes throughout their careers, and\neducated the profession and other urban policy professionals through ongoing\nlearning. Their practice was also a trailblazer for sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Koning has been a committee member of the\nInstitute\u2019s International Chapter since 2010 and has been active in its\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gold Medal jury comprised Ms Cousins,\nRichard Kirk, Peter Elliott, Emma Williamson and Kerry Clare.
