{"id":22882,"date":"2019-07-16T15:59:49","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T05:59:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/?p=22882"},"modified":"2019-07-16T15:59:50","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T05:59:50","slug":"architects-welcome-victorian-combustible-cladding-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/architects-welcome-victorian-combustible-cladding-response\/","title":{"rendered":"Architects welcome Victorian combustible cladding response"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Australian\nInstitute of Architects has welcomed the Andrews Government\u2019s action on\ncombustible cladding, and repeated its call for urgent national reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victorian Chapter\nPresident Amy Muir said the announcement today of a $600 million package of\nrectification works for buildings found to have flammable cladding was a\nsensible and overdue step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018The Institute has been\ncalling for urgent action on flammable cladding and building safety for years,\u2019\nMs Muir said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018We commend the Andrews\nGovernment for their action which puts people\u2019s safety first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018We welcome these\npractical measures to replace combustible cladding and fix buildings to ensure\nsafety and compliance with all building regulations. This work had to be done\nand we are relieved to see the Victorian Government stepping up and getting on with\nthe job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Victoria has set the\nbenchmark and now it is time for other states and territories to take similar\naction in a nationally consistent manner with support from the Commonwealth\nGovernment.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Institute has\ncalled repeatedly for the full and immediate implementation of last year\u2019s\nShergold Weir <a href=\"https:\/\/protect-au.mimecast.com\/s\/BiuICRONkZfVXLuq-NeM?domain=icm-tracking.meltwater.com\">Building Confidence<\/a> report, which sets out a path\nto building safety in a consistent way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Institute agrees\nwith its recommendations, including strict controls Australia-wide on the use\nand sale of combustible cladding, rigorous enforcement of existing safety and\ncertification laws, more thorough examination of materials, and the\nregistration of practitioners in building design, construction and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Ahead of this week\u2019s\nBuilding Ministers\u2019 Forum, it is imperative there is national action on\nflammable cladding and other urgent safety issues,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Jurisdictions know\nwhat they need to do. Community safety and confidence is paramount and it is\nbeing put at risk when these vital reforms are delayed.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Victorian Cladding <a href=\"https:\/\/protect-au.mimecast.com\/s\/CLKsCVARo4Sv8AHkjq4J?domain=icm-tracking.meltwater.com\">Taskforce<\/a> said there were almost 500\nbuildings considered extreme risk or high risk.
