{"id":828,"date":"2013-06-28T10:58:50","date_gmt":"2013-06-28T00:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/?p=828"},"modified":"2019-07-15T14:38:45","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T04:38:45","slug":"community-focused-projects-take-first-place-at-nsw-architecture-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/community-focused-projects-take-first-place-at-nsw-architecture-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Community focused projects take first place at NSW Architecture Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A youth centre in Waterloo, an upgrade to the Art Gallery of New South Wales forecourt, an intergalactic inner-city centre for storytelling and the city\u2019s biggest and brightest new urban precinct are just some of the community focused projects which have won major honours at this year\u2019s Australian Institute of Architects\u2019 NSW Architecture Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Held at the historic Jones Bay Wharf on Thursday 27 June, a total of twenty-seven awards, eight prizes and fourteen commendations were presented in recognition of the best in architecture across the state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp<\/strong>\u2019s (fjmt) <strong><em>Darling Quarter<\/em><\/strong>, an urban and commercial project, led the field of winners taking out several major awards: the <strong>Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design<\/strong>, the <strong>\u00a0Sir Arthur G. Stephenson Award for Commercial Architecture<\/strong>, the <strong>Milo Dunphy Award for Sustainable Architecture<\/strong> and the inaugural <strong>City of Sydney Lord Mayor\u2019s Prize<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_829\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-829\" style=\"width: 3500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2013\/06\/2013023743_4_FrancisJonesMorehenThorpfjmtwithASPECTStudiosandLendLease_DarlingQuarter_FlorianGroehn.Darling.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-829\" alt=\"Darling Quarter by Francis Jones Morehen Thorp (fjmt) with ASPECT Studios and Lend Lease. Image by Florian Groehn.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While primarily home to offices of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the Urban Design jury noted that Darling Quarter is also a major urban revitalisation project for Daring Harbour. For the jury, the project sets \u2018a new benchmark in intelligent place making\u2019 by transforming the public domain through delivering a series of defined public spaces including a pedestrian linkage from the city, a generous public promenade and parkland, and a dynamic playground for the young and old alike.<\/p>\n<p>In presenting the Milo Dunphy Award, the Sustainable Architecture jury said \u2018while its sustainability credentials as a commercial building are strong in isolation; as a precinct, it is transformative\u2019. In addition, the Commercial Architecture jury noted that \u2018Darling Quarter precinct represents the potential for change in the behaviour of how people work\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In awarding her inaugural prize, City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the project \u2018revives the quarter with urbanity, flair and credibility, and provides an exemplary integration of work and recreation spaces\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute\u2019s most prestigious honour, the <strong>Sulman Medal for Public Architecture<\/strong>, went to <strong>Collins and Turner (with City of Sydney)<\/strong> for the <em><strong>Waterloo Youth Family Community Centre<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 home to WEAVE (Working to Educate, Advocate, Voice and Empower), a local association supporting Waterloo\u2019s youth. In awarding the medal, the jury said they had chosen the centre for its \u2018exemplary convergence of public leadership, community initiative and design talent\u2019. Image by Richard Glover.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The \u2018remarkable and understated\u2019 <em><strong>Art Gallery of New South Wales Forecourt Upgrade<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Johnson Pilton Walker<\/strong> was chosen by the Small Project Architecture jury to receive the <strong>Robert Woodward Award<\/strong> for its combination of \u2018discrete landscape adjustments with a sculptural ramp to resolve the longstanding problem of providing equitable access\u2019 to the Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>NSW Premier\u2019s Prize<\/strong> went to <em><strong>Martian Embassy <\/strong><\/em>by <strong>LAVA (Laboratory for Visionary Architecture)<\/strong> \u2013 the new home for not-for-profit creative writing centre, the Sydney Story Factory \u2013 for demonstrating \u2018how it is possible to create more with less\u2019 while still providing a space that inspires and engages \u2018the next generation of creative writers and thinkers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BVN Donovan Hill<\/strong> received the <strong>John Verge Award for Interior Architecture<\/strong> for the <em><strong>The Kinghorn Cancer Centre<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 \u2018a work of remarkable control\u2019 which \u2018has brought warmth and a sense of humanity into a research environment\u2019; while the <em><strong>Gowings and State Theatre Buildings Restoration and Hotel Conversion<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Woodhead and Graham Brooks and Associates, Sydney<\/strong> \u2013 \u2018a remarkable achievement in conservation, refurbishment and adaptive reuse\u2019 \u2013 was presented with the <strong>Greenway Award for Heritage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Noted by the jury as \u2018a jewel within the city skyline\u2019, the <em><strong>AMP Building Sydney Cove<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>PTW Architects<\/strong> was recognised as a \u2018remarkable building, a valuable piece of city making, and an exceptional and generous gift to the character of the city\u2019 with its presentation of the <strong>Award for Enduring Architecture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Candalepas Associates<\/strong>\u2019 beachside apartments at <em><strong>29-35 Prince Street Cronulla<\/strong><\/em> saw them receive the <strong>Aaron Bolot Award for Residential Architecture \u2013 Multiple Housing<\/strong> for an \u2018incredible project that pays careful attention to its context, is well planned and exquisitely detailed\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-833\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.architecture.com.au\/news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2013\/06\/2013023879_1_DrewHeathArchitects_Trnang_BrettBoardmanHERO.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-833 \" alt=\"T\u00edr na n\u00d3g by Drew Heath Architects. Image by Brett Boardman.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The other worldliness of <strong>Drew Heath Architects<\/strong>\u2019 <em><strong>T\u00edr na n\u00d3g<\/strong><\/em>, with its \u2018multiple levels, overlapping spaces and lush vegetation\u2019 made it a unanimous choice by the jury for the <strong>Wilkinson Award for Residential Architecture<\/strong>. The jury noting that \u2018its excellence resides in its eccentricity as much as in its cohesion. Boundaries are blurred; inside to outside, public to private, old to new, grown to made \u2013 an Otherworld\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>An appropriation of an existing shell of an old urban cowshed in Sydney\u2019s inner-west, <em><strong>Cowshed House<\/strong><\/em> by <strong>Carterwilliamson Architects<\/strong> also won an Architecture Award in the Residential Architecture \u2013 Houses category as well as Sustainable Architecture Award and a commendation under the COLORBOND\u00ae Award for Steel Architecture category.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s <strong>COLORBOND\u00ae Award for Steel Architecture<\/strong> went to<em><strong> Iglu Central<\/strong> <\/em>by <strong>Bates Smart<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a multiple housing complex for students in inner-city Sydney which was also presented with an Architecture Award in the Residential Architecture \u2013 Multiple Housing category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BVN Donovan Hill<\/strong> received the <strong>Blacket Prize for Regional Architecture<\/strong> for <em><strong>Charles Sturt University National Life Sciences Hub<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 a new teaching and research facility at Wagga Wagga which the jury commended for creating \u2018a model in planning, design and environmental performance for rural Australian campuses\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Sydney-based architect <strong>Andrew Burns<\/strong> was named the recipient of this year\u2019s <strong>Emerging Architect Prize<\/strong> with the jury recognising his role as \u2018an excellent ambassador for the advancement of the architectural profession within the public arena both locally and internationally\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Other prize recipients this year were: <strong>Sean O\u2019Toole<\/strong> from UrbanGrowth NSW \u2013 recipient of the <strong>NSW President\u2019s Prize<\/strong>; Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority\u2019s <strong>Helen Lochhead<\/strong> \u2013 recipient of the <strong>Marion Mahony Griffin Prize<\/strong> which acknowledges a female architect for a distinctive body of architectural work; architectural critic <strong>Laura Harding<\/strong> \u2013 recipient of the <strong>Adrian Ashton Prize for Writing and Criticism<\/strong>; and <strong>Nathan Etherington<\/strong> of Scale Architecture and the University of Sydney \u2013 recipient of the inaugural <strong>David Lindner Prize<\/strong> which aims to encourage new research on architecture in the public realm.<\/p>\n<p>This year, over 170 entries were received from across New South Wales, with the named award and architecture award winners now progressing to the Australian Institute of Architects\u2019 National Architecture Awards to be announced on Thursday 7 November 2013 at the Sydney Opera House.<\/p>\n<p>Full list of winners:<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Public Architecture<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Sulman Medal<\/b><br \/>\n<i>Waterloo Youth Family Community Centre<\/i> \u2013 Collins and Turner with City of Sydney<\/p>\n<p><b>Commendation<\/b><br \/>\n<i>Museum of Contemporary Art Redevelopment<\/i> \u2013 Architect Marshall in association with the<br \/>\nGovernment Architect\u2019s Office<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Urban Design<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Lloyd Rees Award<\/b><br \/>\n<i>Darling Quarter <\/i>\u2013<i> <\/i>Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (fjmt) with Aspect Studios and Lend Lease<\/p>\n<p><b>Architecture Award<\/b><br \/>\n<i>Pitt Street Mall Public Domain Upgrade<\/i> \u2013 Tony Caro Architecture<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Commercial Architecture<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Sir Arthur G.
