First conceived as bespoke public infrastructure for Tasmania\u2019s wild places, Sentinel Lookout is situated approximately halfway along the Duck Reach walking track within the Gorge. The design is a micro-footprint steel structure, which employs suspension technology to enable a dramatic extension of the platform into the landscape. The central columns of the platform take the vertical loads, with tension rods supporting the cantilever and anchoring the structure back to the rear footing. The rear footing has rock anchors into bedrock to resist uplift and lateral forces. Prefabricated off-site and lifted by helicopter into position in an aerial assembly process, the structure rests subtly in its site context. Architect, engineer and construction team worked deftly together as one entity to bring about a smooth and faultless outcome on assembly day. Offering an exhilarating experience on the Duck Reach track, the structure has been very well received by the local public and visitors to Cataract Gorge since its installation.
