The brief required a contemporary interior environment that would enhance the health and well-being of employees and promote integration, communication and innovation. It was essential for the design to reflect the core values of the business and be “professional but not polished”, “authentic without applied cosmetics”, robust, practical, cost-effective and environmentally responsible. The existing building presented in three parts, including a mid-20th century shopfront, a rear warehouse and a services area linking the two. Providing maximum benefit at minimum cost required a highly considered approach resulting in minimal intervention to the front and back building fabric and the inclusion of a new entry core. A palette of basic, raw, recycled and cost-effective materials has been selected and assembled to exude warmth and comfort, while maintaining the required level of formality. The design promotes physical and visual connectivity combined with optimum aural ambience. Soft, natural light floods the space with the amenity of natural ventilation. The architectural solution has successfully delivered an effective and happy working environment, negotiating the constraints of a demanding budget and time frame, typical of projects in the Tasmanian commercial context.

Architect

1+2 Architecture

Contractors

Vos Construction &
