The Birrells have combined their passion for art, design and architecture into a unique visitor tourism experience, where guests immerse themselves in an art-filled environment and discover a deeper understanding of Tasmania’s culture and creativity. The addition of two garden pavilions nestled deep within the expansive heritage gardens of Hatherley House has expanded the property’s accommodation offering. Importantly, the pavilions also enable the Hatherley Artist-in-Residence Program (HARP). HARP sponsors artist and designer stays to foster inspiration and artistic responses to interpret layered stories about the site and the experience. HARP-sponsored stays and events help bring artists and speakers to the region, with ongoing benefits for our community, including increased creative vibrancy, global awareness and cultural interest. The pavilions are inspired by Chinese lanterns – extending the architectural legacy of Hatherley House, using the neo-classical precedent of the garden folly from 17th to 18th century English landscape design. The 186 year old Hatherley House is alive again today with art, design and architecture – integrating a creative public-private, work-life experiment.

Architect

birrelli art + design + architecture

Contractors

Rosier Construction

Consultants

Structural engineer – GHD

Photographer

Felix Blackman, Gail Shepherd and Rob Burnett

People’s Choice Prize

Vote now for this entry

1 Scone Street | Bento Box | Bonnet Hill Residences | Break O’Day Community Stadium | Brickworks Design Studio | Clarence High School Sports Pavilion | Devil’s Corner | Dunalley House | Five Yards House | Garden Pavilion – Homage to a Benzoline Lighthouse | Hatherley House Garden Pavilions | Horse Shoe House | Jenny’s House | Last Workshop & Apartment Battery, Point | New Town House | (re)barn | Sofia Otto’s Playground | Stornoway | The Corner Store | The Leven Centre | The Student Lounge | Three Capes Track Cabins | Trinity Hill Youth Accommodation & Training Facility | UTAS – Student Centre | UTAS, Tasmanian School of Business and Economics – Centenary Building | UTAS Inveresk Residences | Vodafone Contact Centre Hobart

Hatherley House Garden Pavilions This project has expanded the accommodation offering at the Hatherley Birrell Collection – a boutique art and design accommodation experience developed collaboratively by the architect and artist owners Jack and Rebecca Birrell, which seamlessly combines heritage and contemporary architecture.
