The key concept for the addition was to design a secret world within a simple form. From the street, the extension sits comfortably beside the original façade of the milkman’s cottage and in context with its historic neighbour up the hill. The new form steps off the original home to not only create a formal entry but to allow the original cottage to stand proud on the street and maintain its dominance. Due to the small footprint of the inner-city block, volume and light were tactics used playfully to increase the perceived size of the home. The extension embraces the street edge by pushing its two dominant walls into one corner, using all edges of the block.

Architects

Preston Lane Architects

Practice Team

Project architect – Benn Turner

Design architect – Daniel Lane

Design architect – Bek Verrier

Associate – Justin Hanlon

Graduate of architecture – Andrew Kerr

Consultants

Builder – Owner-builder

Structural engineers – Aldanmark Consulting Engineers

Building surveyor – Eaglings Southern Building Surveying

Photographer – Adam Gibson

Categories

Commercial Architecture | Education | Heritage | Interior Architecture | Public Architecture | Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations & Additions) | Residential Architecture – Houses (New) | Small Project Architecture

” order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″] Milkman’s Cottage The scope of this project involved alterations and additions to a small 1870s milkman’s cottage.
