With neighbours in close proximity, existing trees formed an important role in the spatial strategy for privacy. The home is entered via a simple timber screen that opens into a small, landscaped courtyard. From here, one moves up and onto the first floor, which offers superb views to the River Derwent.

Moving to the rear of the property, rooms wrap around a central courtyard, which provides an intimate, private space. The sleeping wing bends around boundaries and the resultant rooms are oriented back to northern natural light and distant water views. The house provides places for all members of the family, big or small, to have their own space. These spaces are, in turn, linked to a generous volume that contains the shared kitchen, dining and living functions.

Architects

Room11

Practice Team

Project architect – Nathan Crump

Design architect – Thomas Bailey

Consultants

Principal builder – Jonathan Tew

Builder – Elevate Building Tasmania

Structural Engineers – Aldanmark Consulting Engineers

Photographer – Ben Hosking

Categories

Commercial Architecture | Education | Heritage | Interior Architecture | Public Architecture | Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations & Additions) | Residential Architecture – Houses (New) | Small Project Architecture

” order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″] The Nelson House The Nelson House is organised strategically across two levels to give the residence both privacy and prospect within its suburban site.
