Garden Cemetery Chapel
The chapel serves the community of Alice Springs, providing a place for gathering, grieving and celebrating the lives of friends and family who have died. It is designed as a non-denominational space, open to all religions and ceremonies.
The chapel provides a dignified setting, suitable for both intimate gatherings and large funeral services, with undercover space for up to 250 people. The large doors to the verandah can fully enclose the interior, or slide into concealed cavities to provide a 13 metre wide uninterrupted opening with views of the Garden Cemetery and the MacDonnell Range.
The quality of interior light was carefully considered, with a roof light over a lightwell at the focal point of the nave. The natural materials convey the meaning and purpose of the chapel and its intended longevity. Stained plywood, bare concrete, concrete block and inserts of local sandstone combine in a simple and dignified composition.
