RDH Emergency Department External Waiting Area
The Royal Darwin Hospital Emergency Department (RDH) External Refurbishment project provides both a striking entrance point to the Emergency Department of the hospital, creates visual connection between spaces and successfully delivers a choice of diverse options for waiting visitors which are culturally sensitive and appropriate for the region.
The entrance statement playfully uses perforated screen elements with artwork depicting the Pandanus, a Territory icon, which was used as regional design inspiration. The covered link provides shelter and shade for pedestrian access during adverse weather conditions and connects the areas with a visually powerful presence.
Informal and formal seating options provide visitors with options to wait and interact with the environment, in comfort and security, whilst still being discreetly monitored by triage staff. A sheltered verandah with lush landscaping adjacent provides a familiar, non-clinical environment to wait for treatment.
