Pool + Park takes top place at NSW Architecture Awards

Sydney’s Prince Alfred Pool + Park Upgrade – ‘a rare synthesis of art and landscape, urban design and architecture’ – has won both the Sulman Medal for Public Architecture and the Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design at this year’s Australian Institute of Architects’ NSW Architecture Awards.

Presented at the historic Jones Bay Wharf on Thursday 26 June, a total of forty-two awards, nine prizes and eighteen commendations were given to recognise the very best in NSW architecture.

The Prince Alfred Pool + Park Upgrade by Neeson Murcutt Architects in association with City of Sydney was also the joint winner of the City of Sydney Lord Mayor’s Prize along with Environa Studio’s The Wayside Chapel.

In awarding the Sulman Medal to Prince Alfred Pool + Park Upgrade, the jury noted that ‘the juxtaposition of built form and landscape, of privacy and openness, the use of natural light and air, the selection of materials, colour, graphics and planting, make this project a delight in every detail’.

Prince Alfred Pool + Park Upgrade’s successful transformation of the public domain secured its place as joint winner of the City of Sydney Lord Mayor’s Prize and was noted ‘a wonderful memorial to the late Nick Murcutt’.

The Wayside Chapel by Environa Studio also received the Milo Dunphy Award for Sustainable Architecture for ‘encompassing the true nature of sustainability’. The jury noted that ‘what makes this building stand out has been the additional emphasis on less mainstream aspects of sustainability’ including ‘a green roof to grow fruit and vegetable crops for the onsite café and the use of colours and materials to influence occupant mood and wellbeing – all based on solid research’.

Lippmann Partnership/Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners’ 8 Chifley Square – ‘a building that makes its mark clearly and unambiguously within the Sydney skyline’ – received the Sir Arthur G. Stephenson Award for Commercial Architecture along with commendations in the COLORBOND® Award for Steel Architecture and Sustainable Architecture categories.

The interiors for the Sydney Commonwealth Parliament Offices by Architectus + Ingenhoven were recognised with the John Verge Award for Interior Architecture for being ‘seamlessly
integrated within the curves and sinuous forms of 1 Bligh Street, Sydney’ – the multi-award winning building designed by the same practices 2011.

Johnson Pilton Walker’s White Bay Cruise Terminal received the COLORBOND® Award for Steel Architecture for their ‘minimal intervention’ to the existing site which allows for ‘the facilitation of new uses over time’ while still speaking ‘eloquently of its industrial maritime history’ – a ‘befitting landing point for the thousands of visitors who arrive in Sydney by ship’.

The new home for the Darlinghurst Theatre Company, Eternity Playhouse by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects – ‘a skilful refurbishment and adaptation of the heritage-listed 1887 Burton Street Tabernacle’ – received the Greenway Award for Heritage Architecture; while the ‘discreet and deceptively complex’ Foley Park Amenities by Stanic Harding, situated in Glebe, was recognised with the Robert Woodward Award for Small Project Architecture.

Griffith House by Popov Bass Architects was this year’s recipient of the Wilkinson Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New) for its ‘delightful sequence of spaces’ and masterful use of light throughout which is ‘even more greatly appreciated when the house as “art gallery” is recognised’.

This year a new named award in residential architecture was established to recognise the importance of alterations and additions, especially for small practices, and was named in acknowledgment of the mid-20th century partnership of Hugh and Eva Buhrich and their contribution to the profession – the refined and crafted architecture of Hugh, as well as the sustained promotion of architecture undertaken by Eva.

Stone House by CHROFI was the inaugural winner of the Hugh and Eva Buhrich Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations & Additions) for its ‘succinct transformation of a small dwelling’ west of Byron Bay which has lessons for residential architecture in the ‘richness of its humble, well lit, textural spaces which are conducive to closeness and conversation’ for those fortunate enough to experience it.

The Aaron Bolot Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing went to Bates Smart’s Gantry located in Camperdown, which the jury noted as ‘an exemplary response to the challenge of designing a large urban renewal project with significant site, environmental and cost constraints’ and an excellent ‘demonstration of the singular contribution good architects can bring to citymaking within a commercial framework’, particularly when they are involved in the entire development process of a project.

CB Alexander College, Tocal built in 1964 with a design that ‘fused the traditional elements of collegiate architecture – the cloister, the great hall, the chapel and refectory – with motifs drawn from Asian architecture’ by Ian McKay and Philip Cox, architects in association, was presented with the Award for Enduring Architecture. The jury noted that the project survives in its entirety and that the ‘buildings continue to be both appreciated and immaculately maintained’ or ‘seamlessly extended’.

An ‘exemplary project demonstrating a clear concept, an understanding of place, and the successful integration of art, architecture and landscape’ located in Harden, Garangula Gallery by Fender Katsalidis Mirams Architects, was honoured with the Blacket Prize for Regional Architecture; while The Boilerhouse by Tanner Kibble Denton Architects – a new student centre for the University of Western Sydney’s Parramatta campus which is an ‘intelligent and thoughtful’ reuse and adaptation of the 1894 heritage site – received this year’s NSW Premier’s Prize.

Shaun Carter of inner-west firm Carterwilliamson Architects was announced as the recipient of this year’s Emerging Architect Prize for his ‘advancement of the architectural profession within the public arena’ and Steve Kennedy of Kennedy Associates Architects received the NSW President’s Prize for his ‘sustained contribution to the betterment of the profession in NSW’.

Design Director for the City of Sydney, Bridget Smyth, was the recipient of the Marion Mahony Griffin Prize for her ‘strong leadership in the transformation of Sydney and the shaping of the city’s sustainable future’.

Janne Ryan from ABC Radio National’s By Design program was the recipient of the Adrian Ashton Prize for Writing and Criticism and Ben Wollen was awarded this year’s David Lindner Prize for his proposed research project Conflicts on the periphery – an investigation into the urban renewal of post-bushfire affected areas.

Almost 200 entries were submitted for this year’s NSW Architecture Awards from across the state and the named award and architecture award winners will now progress to the Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards to be announced on Thursday 6 November 2014 in Darwin.

An exhibition of the award-winning projects from NSW will be on show to the general public at Tusculum (3 Manning Street, Potts Point) from Monday 30 June.

Contributing to communities – 2014 Tasmanian Architecture Awards

The 2014 Tasmanian Architecture Awards, announced tonight at MONA, have celebrated the contribution of architecture to the state’s communities from the small scale through to major urban improvements.

A highly valued contribution to Hobart’s public realm, UTAS Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies (IMAS) by John Wardle Architects + Terroir, in association, was the big winner on the night, taking home two Named Awards and three Architecture Awards across Public, Interior, Sustainable, COLORBOND® and Urban Design categories.

‘IMAS is an exemplar of careful and skilful placemaking through respect for the setting and history of a place and an across the board win for Hobart,’ the jury said.

‘Locating IMAS in Sullivans Cove resonates powerfully with the city’s historic Antarctic connections, while its detail thoughtfully evokes the patterning of the Antarctic wilderness.’

The Peter Willmott Award for Small Project Architecture was presented to Birrelli Art + Design + Architecture for their pro bono work creating an elegant timber building to house the Bicheno Surf Life Saving Club.

‘It could have been a tin shed but thanks to a brave community and a talented architectural team, it is much more. The new surf club was brought about by a need for storage near the foreshore. The architect saw a bigger opportunity to enhance the coastal environment and generate community pride, as well as meeting the functional requirements of the club.

‘The jury congratulates the architects and celebrates this reminder that the smallest project with the most meagre budget has the potential to be an architectural masterpiece.’

Following on from a successful Stage 01, which received an Award for Urban Design at both the Tasmanian and National Architecture Awards in 2013, GASP! Stage 02 by Room 11 was lauded by the jury as a focal point around which to build community pride and collective memory, receiving the Dirk Bolt Award for Urban Design.

The jury awarded the top Residential – Houses (New) honour to Launceston-based Philip M Dingemanse for his own home, Southern Outlet House.

‘This house is rich in exploration – from its minimal footprint and budget to its engagement with its immediate surroundings and the nearby highway. It deserves high recognition by virtue of its character: playful and confident, modest in size, yet bold in expression,’ the jury observed.

Projects that received a Named Award or an Architecture Award now progress to the 2014 National Architecture Awards to be announced in Darwin on 6 November.

Honouring excellence – 2014 Queensland Architecture Awards

Architects from all over the state have come together in celebration of excellence in good design at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2014 Queensland Architecture Awards announced tonight at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

‘Thoroughly considered and exquisitely detailed’, the University of Queensland’s Advanced Engineering Building (AEB) by Richard Kirk Architect and HASSELL was the big winner of the night, taking home three Named Awards.

Awarding the project the FDG Stanley Award for Public Architecture, the GHM Addison Award for Interior Architecture and the Harry Marks Award for Sustainable Architecture, the jury described the collaborative effort as a ‘significant benchmark in sustainability’.

‘The project provides teaching, research and laboratory facilities either side of a five-storey timber clad, elongated central atrium with a double glazed roof. AEB expertly embraces setting and place and has created an exemplar of engagement with renewable resources and local industry,’ added the jury.

Charles Wright’s ‘extraordinary response to a very personal and adventurous brief’ in the Daintree, Stamp House, was well received by the jury and won the Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New), the top residential award for the night.

‘The concrete fabric chosen for permanence, robustness and thermal mass is placed on a man-made lake and shaped and patterned around its quirky personal spaces to somehow make its other worldly presence take its place in the world’s oldest and most pristine landscape,’ the jury reflected.

Following on from the six Regional Architecture Awards, the state competition resulted in projects across all regions being honoured with the jury presenting 10 Named Awards, 13 Architecture Awards and 13 Commendations in addition to the Queensland Chapter’s Art in Architecture Prize (see below for full list of winners).

Celebration of old and new at ACT Architecture Awards

From a record 51 entries, the jury awarded 35 Awards and Commendations at the 2014 ACT Architecture Awards on Saturday 14 June at the recently refurbished REX Hotel.

For the second year in a row, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer’s (TZG) National Arboretum has been honoured at the ACT Awards. Following on from the 2013 Romaldo Giurgola Award for Public Architecture for the Village Centre, TZG along with Taylor Cullity Lethlean have taken out the 2014 Sir John Overall Award for Urban Design and the chapter’s highest accolade, the Canberra Medallion.

‘The National Arboretum has transformed a devastated site into a major education, research and recreation venue for the National Capital. The seamlessly collaborative architecture and landscape teams have established a significant green heart for Canberra.

‘An important local initiative with national and international benefits already evident, it is a most worthy recipient of the 2014 Canberra Medallion,’ the jury said.

Apostolic Nunciature 1976–1977 by past Gold Medallist Enrico Taglietti received the Award for Enduring Architecture. Built to accommodate diplomatic representatives of the Holy See, the Apostolic Nunciature received several RAIA (ACT) merit awards soon after its completion and Mr Taglietti was awarded a Papal Knighthood of St Gregory the Great in recognition of his design.

‘The 2014 Award for Enduring Architecture acknowledges the way the building has served its purpose well and has been cared for in a loving manner. The architect deserves credit for the strength and appropriateness of his high quality original design,’ the jury noted.

Other notable winners on the night include Australian National University Australian Centre on China in the World by Munns Sly Moore in association with Mo Atelier Szeto which took home the Romaldo Giurgola Award for Public Architecture, Art in Architecture Prize and an INLITE Light in Architecture Prize – Commendation. Hotel Hotel by March Studio also received multiple recognitions with the W Hayward Morris Award for Interior Architecture and an Art in Architecture Prize.

The top residential prize, the Malcolm Moir and Heather Sutherland Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New), was presented to Rodney Moss in association with Ken Murtagh and Pip Smith for The Mook.

‘The Mook is highly detailed and beautifully crafted and a successful essay in the provision of flexible housing choice that has been delivered in a delightful and bespoke pavilion,’ reflected the jury.

Projects that received a Named Award or an Architecture Award now progress to the 2014 National Architecture Awards to be announced in Darwin on 6 November.

Architecture ideas competition generates light rail solutions

The winners of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Light Rail Station Ideas Competition have been revealed at the ACT Architecture Awards this evening.

Launched in December 2013, the competition sought ideas for the design and siting of a light rail station at Dickson along the City to Gungahlin Transit Corridor, responding to the nature of Canberra’s landscape, integration into the local community and architectural presentation as a transport hub.

Four submissions from a total of 21 entries were selected by the jury for recognition, representing radically different solutions to the design of the light rail station and its potential contributions to Canberra’s principal transport corridor and the city’s urban heart.

Ann Cleary (University of Canberra) and Cassandra Cutler (Total Project Group) were awarded first prize for their entry, Urban Line.

The winning light rail design is devoted to the creation of fine-grained urban pavilions calibrated to the walkable city. Existing parks and green spaces along Northbourne Avenue are engaged and linked as cultural hubs by means of the light rail, intensifying the opportunities for transit corridor users to engage with each other in a humane city environment.

Simon Corbell MLA, Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development, presented Ann and Cassandra with the accolade via video link to Venice, where they are attending the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale as part of their prize.

Recent graduates of architecture Sarah Herbert and Kate Shepherd won second prize for their submission, Layered. The scheme focuses on the urgency of sustainability in its creation of a Dickson transit hub through repurposing existing commercial building stock. Those buildings are stripped back to their structural cores to allow a new ‘layering’ of youthful individual business ventures in integrated shipping containers or pre-fab elements to give an inimitable fresh character to the transit zone.

Third prize was awarded Nugroho Utomo and Gerard O’Connell for their project, Crossroads, and Can Ercan was awarded fourth prize.

Jury Chair John McInerney, former Manager of Planning for the City of Sydney and City of Melbourne, was joined on the jury by Iain Maxwell, Director of supermanoeuvre and Pamille Berg, public art consultant and former Director of Mitchell/Giurgola & Thorp.

A selection of entries will feature in a public exhibition at the National Museum of Democracy in the Provisional Parliament House later this year.

Institute welcomes David Karotkin as 75th National President

David Karotkin has become the 75th National President of the Australian Institute of Architects at the Annual General Meeting held in Melbourne on 28 May.

Immediate Past President Paul Berkemeier, National President David Karotkin and President Elect Jon Clements at the Annual General Meeting.
Immediate Past President Paul Berkemeier, National President David Karotkin and President Elect Jon Clements at the Annual General Meeting.

Mr Karotkin comes to the National Presidency following three years as WA Chapter President. In this role, he strongly advocated for the profession in that state. Now, the profession will benefit from his passion, leadership and advocacy at a national level.

‘I am honoured by the responsibility of representing our membership in this role and am dedicated to making a meaningful contribution throughout the year.

‘The role of National President is part of a continuum, from a term as National Councillor and President Elect through to support as Immediate Past President. And while I’ll continue to work with my fellow councillors in implementing strategic initiatives currently in development, I would also like to promote some issues that I am particularly interested in, including mandatory use of architects for the design of certain types of buildings and improved member engagement with the Institute,’ Mr Karotkin said.

Mr Karotkin received a Bachelor of Architecture, First Class Honours from Curtin University and is Managing Director of award winning Perth-based architectural consultancy Sandover Pinder, where he has worked since 1995. He has practised in the United Kingdom, Israel, Asia and Australia across a diverse portfolio of architectural projects including healthcare, education, law and order and community developments. Recently he led the firm’s expansion into the Indonesian healthcare industry, which has helped to set new international standards.

Taking over the role from Paul Berkemeier, Mr Karotkin thanked Mr Berkemeier for his leadership and contribution to issues including gender equity and diversity, and architectural education over the past 12 months.

‘Paul has been hugely valuable as a mentor and an advocate for the profession and his work in developing Australia’s bid for the UIA 2020 Congress is to be commended,’ Mr Karotkin said.

Former Victorian Chapter President Jon Clements has been appointed President Elect.

It’s all in the detail – Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards announced

Thirty projects from across Brisbane were honoured at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2014 Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards announced tonight at special ceremony held at the Edmund Rice Performing Arts Centre.

Queensland 2014 State Awards Jury Director, Liam Proberts, presented 30 Regional Commendations to projects spanning a range of sizes and purposes, which now progress to the Queensland State Architecture Awards, announced in Brisbane on 20 June

The winners of the John Dalton Award for Building of the Year, House of the Year and an Enduring Architecture Prize were also announced.

The John Dalton Award for Building of the Year went to UQ Advanced Engineering Building by Richard Kirk Architect and HASSELL (Joint Venture) in addition to receiving two Regional Commendations for Public Architecture and Interior Architecture.

‘The UQ Advanced Engineering Building (AEB), a collaboration of Richard Kirk Architect and HASSELL exquisitely embodies a significant benchmark in sustainability within a complex building program of research, teaching and learning. AEB expertly embraces setting and place and has created an exemplar of engagement with renewable resources and local industry.

‘The project provides teaching, research and laboratory facilities either side of a five storey timber clad, elongated central atrium with a double glazed roof. The axis terminates in an expressive timber trussed off-form concrete lecture theatre with the lake setting as backdrop. Thoroughly considered and exquisitely detailed,’ the jury said.

Highgate Hill House by Twofold Studio and Cox Rayner Architects was awarded the Brisbane House of the Year.

‘A sublime piece of architecture, expressed through intricate detailing that is seamlessly engaged with an ironically humble brief. A visceral experience of occupation is manifest through a series of spatially modest but poetically executed rooms. A bespoke, controlled garden and a sequence of outdoor living zones complete the project,’ reported the jury.

The jury nominated and awarded a special Enduring Architecture Prize to AH Job and RP Froud for their 1960 project Torbreck, Queensland’s first multi-storey home unit development.
