41X

41Xfromthetop
41X – the view from the top

This week, 41X has topped out.

The focus now shifts to the fitout of the Institute’s levels, designed by Hassell.

Hassell has conceived a cool green interior, one that complements the exterior, and reflects the building’s sustainability ethos. The office space is open plan, with ample formal and informal meeting and break out spaces as staff and visitors are encouraged to move comfortably through all five of the Institute’s levels.

This is a significant milestone for the Institute’s Melbourne home. With completion set for the end of October, we are now working towards our relocation later in the year.

In addition, all of the non-institute floors have been sold, with tenants soon commencing their own fitout process. The Institute looks forward to working with the future occupants and incorporating best practice principles for the sustainability of the building.

We are eager for members to see our new building. 41X will be home to the Victorian Chapter, a substantial number of national and Archicentre staff. But most importantly, it is also a members’ hub, a place for you to meet colleagues or clients, with the convenience of a café and the Architext bookshop on Level 1 and a flexible function and CPD space on Level 2. Members will have the opportunity to check it all out with preview tours taking place later in the year. Details on these to come

For more information, visit the 41X website.

Kevin Mark Low – International Speaker Series

ISS Kevin Low

Following on from his role as a keynote speaker for the 2013 regional conference Spirit of Place in Cairns, Kevin Low will be touring nationally as the next face of the renowned International Speaker Series.

Kevin Low divides his time between architectural and product design, concept master plans, teaching architecture at University Malaya and providing design concept services to clients and other consultants. He founded his practice, smallprojects, in 2002.

Engaged in the search for questions rather than solutions, Kevin’s work is plural in outcome, focused on addressing necessity, time, relevance, and the specificity of context as a process of design. With each project, big or small, he is interested in how issues and elements, both large and small, only ever find meaning in the intimate junctions where they meet, and how the big picture is less about finding radical solutions, than a radical way of framing questions.

His selected work has been published in architectural journals from Europe, Asia and Oceania, and in a book he has written, smallprojects (adaptus 2010), distributed internationally.

Grand Designs Australia – Call out for projects

Grand Designs Australia is seeking ambitious and exciting architectural residential projects for the forthcoming series. The project must be a complete build, not a renovation or restoration. Also, the clients should be closely involved in the process (and willing to participate in the show).

Filming is taking place until early May/June 2014 (completion before this time is required) and the series will air October 2014. Contact Emma Duncan at Fremantle Media for more information Emma.Duncan@fremantlemedia.com.au.

Institute news

Member survey feedback

In late 2012 the Institute conducted a survey of members to ascertain levels of satisfaction with current products and services, and to provide members an opportunity to give feedback on their membership experience. The survey provided us with quantitative data (the results informing the performance indicators in the 2012 Annual Report along with an analysis of trends for the past three years). In addition, it invited members to respond in their own words to the following questions:

  • What areas should the Institute focus on in future to ensure its strategic objectives are met?
  • Do you have any other feedback or comments you would like to provide?

We collated the comments and closely reviewed each of them. From this process we have created a comprehensive report that addresses the common themes of the feedback and that also serves to update members on current and planned initiatives. Download the report here.

Material in the media – ArchiTel.TV

During the 2013 National Architecture Conference – Material, held in Melbourne last month, ArchiTel (with 3RRR’s The Architects: Stuart Harrison, Simon Knott and Rory Hyde) interviewed conference keynote speakers Virgina San Fratello (USA) and Philippe Rahm (France) about their responses and philosophies regarding the materials they have chosen to employ in their projects. Watch the clips here.
