The ALC cultural centres are designed to adapt to community needs for educational and creatives uses, located at Angurugu and Umbakumba, on Groote Eylandt. The two sites accommodate centres reflective of the extensive community consultation process with multiple stakeholders, aimed to achieve a holistic response to the brief. The centres express the unique culture of the Anindilyakwa people and facilitate connections from youth to elders.
Angurugu site is larger and has allowed for three separate buildings with meandering walkways connecting the facilities. Umbakumba is a smaller site, accommodating a single centre. Both facilites have large, open, covered decking areas, vibrant external colour palette and combinations of shared communal spaces and separate men’s and women’s areas, aligning with cultural requirements.
The designs ensure that culturally appropriate needs have been met and the spaces are functional and flexible, inside and outside, with the ability to be utilised for a variety of activities.
