17 December 2018

Another year is coming to a close so it’s time to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year filled with laughter and joy with those you love. It’s been a huge year for the Chapter delivering close to 400 events across QLD and our many programs and engaging with upwards of 4000 people within the design community. A big thank you goes out to all our volunteers and partners whose support ensures we can deliver great events including CPD, Awards and networking.

Change is always occurring as we test new ideas, and respond to member needs. 2019 will be no different as we look to continuously improve. The Regional Awards events will be reinstated as a shortlisting event and work is being done with regional representatives to plan these events in line with regional member needs. The State Awards looks to be bigger and better than ever with a great venue to be announced early next year. Our Brisbane Metro Events include an Art and Architecture series, including partnering with the Maud Street Photo Gallery in February to celebrate the John Gollings “History of The Built World” exhibition in February and an Art and Architecture Exhibition at the Chapter in March showcasing artists RW Allen and Jane du Rand.

The second half of the year will include our Out There Speaker Series to showcase the QLD Architecture Award winners and a Regional Symposium in Cairns planned for October. There is absolutely every reason to get involved with the Chapter next year and celebrate our QLD Architectural community.

Last but not least we finished the year with our annual Christmas Party co-Hosted with EmAGN last Thursday. What a fabulous night filled with laughter, music including a great performance by Student member Osman Jarel, good conversation, some questionable dance skills as the night progressed and a stand out team costume of fabulous Christmas Lobsters. You can check out the photos here.

Merry Christmas from all of the team at the Chapter. Please note that the team will be off on our end of year team building lunch on Friday 21st December, , and we will see you on the 7th of January 2019

Cheers

This week I would like to stress the importance of attending our upcoming workshops on Project Bank Accounts (PBA’s) being held on August 8th. These sessions are aimed at specifically discussing how the new legislation will impact on Architects working in superintendent or head consultant roles, where the contract is between 1 to 10 million dollars. Whilst PBA’s are currently restricted to government projects this year, it is important to realise that they will be rolled out to private sector projects from March 2019 and has the potential to significantly impact on how members manage their roles as superintendents and head consultants.

The workshops will run for 2 hours, and attendance is capped at 15 per session to ensure the conversation is personalised and able to answer specific questions around obligations and legalities. If you feel that you will be impacted by this legislation from next year onwards then I strongly recommend you attend to ensure you can adequately prepare for the change. You can book into a workshop time here.

On a lighter note, Paul and I will be endeavouring to produce a video chat update once a month on our activities. you can view the first one on the Chapters Facebook page. We hope that this will be a more informal insight into the activities of the Chapter and allow you to ask questions or make suggestions.

It’s also not too late to attend this weeks “Out There Speaker Series” event on Thursday. This week we will hear from Anna O’Gorman and the North Shore Pavilion,  Guymer Bailey Architects in Collaboration Norman Richards Building Design + Interiors for the Mary Cain Cross Scenic Reserve and BVN for the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre. You can purchase a ticket here.

Hi All

We have been working on several government submissions around non-conforming building products and the “Building Confidence” Shergold Weir report. In collaboration with the national team we have submitted a formal response to the Permanent labelling of ACP product Discussion Paper which can be read here and will this week submit a letter to Minster de Brenni supporting the 24 recommendations in the Shergold Weir report and asking him to commit to implementing the recommendations within QLD regulation and legislative frameworks. In addition this week Paul and myself will meet with MP Michael Hart Shadow Minister for Housing and Public Works as well as MP Andrew Powell Shadow Minster for Infrastructure and planning as part of the Chapters commitment to building relationships with both sides of government. For those that haven’t read the Shergold Weir report you can do so here .

Tomorrow we are hosting a lunch time Practice forum for any architects involved in government work. The speakers include

  • Harry Venmans, Executive Director of  Building Construction and Maintenance
  • Logan Timms, Executive Director of  Building Industry and Policy and Maintenance  and
  • Mike Essery, Acting Director of  Building Industry and Policy.

The forum will cover Govt procurement and pipelines, non-conforming building products and the Building industry fair payment act. There are still tickets available to attend and this is a great opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback, good bad or other wise to government regarding current policy and regulation. You can buy tickets here.

Don’t forget this week we kick off with the first night of our “Out There” speaker series. Thursday nights presenters include the architects behind ‘The Stores’ Cavill Architects in conjunction with Jasper Brown Architects, ‘The Science Place’ by Hassell and ‘Stradbroke House’ By Tim Bennetton Architects in association with Gabrielle Poole. We are very happy to announce that Gabrielle Poole will be joining us on Thursday to present alongside Tim Bennetton. This is an excellent opportunity to hear from this years named awards winners and the stories that led them to their designs. You can purchase tickets here.

Last but by no means least we have released tickets for our Regional Roadshow Events, the first of which is Townsville on August 10th, followed by the Sunshine Coast on August 17th and Central QLD (Rockhampton) on August 24th. Paul, Courtney and myself will be attending these events so it will be a great opportunity to let us know how to best meet the needs of members in these regions, along with hearing some great presentations from 2 award winning architects.

The 2018 QLD State Awards night was held on Friday night at the QT Hotel and what a night it turned out to be! A huge congratulations to all our Named Award and Award winners as well as those commended, this is a big achievement in what was a hotly contested field of 174 entries. It should also be noted that the best dressed winner went to Bruce Wolfe and his Hot Pink flamingo suit, which was most definitely more then a “pop” of pink. Congratulations must also go to our QUT SONA team who won the people’s choice for the student art installation. Their beautiful piece titled “wave” was a thought provoking piece on change. Keep an eye on the Chapters Facebook and Instagram pages as we will be posting photos from the night over the coming week.

Message from QLD Chapter President 090418

Greetings to my fellow architects.

I have been overwhelmed by so many calls, emails and social media posts congratulating me in the new role as your President.  It’s all a bit daunting and I will try so very hard to not let you all down!  It won’t be for want of trying!  Prior to the official handover from Bruce Wolfe (who did such a great job in the role) I have made an effort to get out and meet more of the architectural ‘flock’ by attending some of our Committee meetings including Sustainability, Practice, Education to get the ‘vibe’ of the thing.  I also took trips down to the Gold Coast and out to Toowoomba to see John Thong and Paul Worroll in action as the current State Jury and meet with our regional membership in these places.  I hope to do the same with the other regions and the new awards process will give me the opportunity later in the year to get up to the north of our big state.

Just before the big handover ‘gig’ at Eat Street Markets I’d spent a few days in the ACT putting on my ‘trainer wheels’ and getting involved in our first National Council (NC) meeting of the year.  This meeting was skilfully chaired by my fellow Queensland architect Richard Kirk, who stands down as National President in the next couple of months (A big effort).  The relatively new executive / management ‘machine’ or team at National is impressive and I look forward to working with them, our local team and our grass roots members to build a stronger Institute in my years as President.  I’m looking forward to the imminent release of the new web based ‘Practice Notes’ which will supersede the old ‘Acumen’ as we had a sneak preview at NC!  They look fantastic, given all the work by Rachael Heise, the National Acumen Task Group and Ian Kynaston the Chief Information Officer.

So feel free to contact myself or Melissa Greenall our ED if you have any feedback as we bed down so many new things in my term at the helm!

Paul Trotter

The Easter long weekend is just around the corner so I hope you all take the time to spend with friends and family. It’s far too easy to get caught up in the pressure of “life” and its various deadlines and commitments, So I hope you can all take advantage of a few days off to relax and enjoy some down time.

It was wonderful to celebrate the Presidents Honour’s event on Friday night, 120 members and VIPS came along for a fun night very much focused on the social side of bringing members together. We would like to once again congratulate our newly appointed Fellows and Life Fellows, and our various prize winners.

Fellows

  • Sandra Browne FRAIA
  • Jeffrey Briant FRAIA

Life Fellows:

  • Bruce Medek LFRAIA
  • Shane Thompson LFRAIA
  • Richard Kirk LFRAIA

We also celebrated our student achievements, with both the Board of Architects Prize and the QIA medallion winners being announced.

Sue Savage presented the 2017 Board of Architects Prize winners as follows:

Hamish Lonergan – UQ

Courtney Villegas – Griffith

The Institute QIA Medallion was awarded as follows:

Hamish Lonergan – UQ

Greta Walker – QUT

Benjamin Campbell – Griffith

Sarah Kukkiriza Ndagire – BOND

AWS presented Christina Cho as The Queensland recipient of the 2018 Emerging Architect Prize

The presidents prize for 2017 went to 2 very deserving winners:

Richard Stringer

Richard has long been interested in architectural photography and in 1966 held his first exhibition Queensland Background. In 1967 he commenced practice as an architectural photographer and has been commissioned by leading Queensland architects to record their work. Richard has embarked on a continuing commitment to record the landscape, architecture and industrial archaeology of QLD. His photographs have been the subjects of numerous exhibitions as well as regular exhibitions in commercial galleries. In 2013, the Queensland Art Gallery held a retrospective exhibition of his work.

Richard has provided photographs for many books that sit on bookshelves of Architects across the country, and Collaborators over the years include his wife Marguerite, Janet Hogan, Dianne Byrne, Judith McKay, Howard Tanner and Robert Riddel.

You will find the work of the first recipient of this year’s president’s prize in the archives and on the walls of many of Queensland’s top practices- he is the very definition of an expert in his field- architect and architectural photographer Richard Stringer, life fellow of the Institute.

EmAGN QLD

EmAGN are is the Emerging Architects and Graduate Network in QLD, who organise diverse events that promote the rich mix of social, political, cultural and sometimes controversial topics in the QLD Design environment. The small but dedicated committee have worked hard to promote architecture to the wider creative and cultural community , whilst promoting the benefits of cross disciplinary professional relationships that will benefit the development of Queensland’s built environment.

EmAGN is a crucial element of the Queensland chapter, their innovative speaker series include “New Build” a three part series bringing together a panel of young professionals from architecture, builders, planners and related sectors to share experiences and build a sense of community and support. The “Value” series has created a platform our early career architects to share their work and gain invaluable experience presenting to a broader audience. EmAGN also make ongoing contributions to the success of the PALS program through events such as Regi frustration, supporting early career architects prepare for their board registration exams and interviews.

The world of the recent graduate in architecture is challenging in many ways. The body of knowledge, the complexities of practice and working with clients for the first time.

Luckily there is EmAGN , recipient of 2018 President’s prize. EmAGN gives a voice to early career architects and help ensure that their needs are supported by the institute, contributing to the Chapters goals of creating an inclusive and welcoming community for all architects.

As we approach Easter, for those of you looking for the last of your CPD points we have some great CPD occurring to help ensure you meet the board requirements:

Brisbane: Wednesday 21stArchitecture in Bushfires

Toowoomba: Wednesday 21stBuilding Acoustic Fundamentals

Sunshine Coast: Thursday 22ndArchitech

Gold Coast: Tuesday 27thPractice forum Succession Planning and Insurances

Those members based in Brisbane I would encourage you to participate in the Brisbane City Council, Plan your Brisbane online “have your say” and follow up survey. The initiative is looking to see what Brisbane residents want in regards to the local built environment. Whilst the portal is aimed at the general public, its important that as Architects we have a voice and with close to 1600 members based in the Brisbane metro area, this would ensure a strong design voice in the online submissions. The Chapter will also be making a formal submission to the Council in regards to the “Plan Your Brisbane” initiative. You can access the online portal here

Lastly this Friday is the Presidents Honours event, and our final opportunity to thank outgoing President Bruce Wolfe for his contribution to Chapter Council and the QLD architecture community over the last two years. There are a limited number of tickets left and I would encourage you to come along to what will be a great night of celebration. To book your tickets Click Here

Hi All

This week we have some great events partnering with APAF including our first community engagement event with the Museum of Brisbane, “Speed Date an Architect” tomorrow night. This is followed by the sold out Small Practice Forum on Thursday and then the “Don Watson, A Civil Servant” Exhibition launch here at the chapter on Saturday afternoon. I am looking forward to seeing you at some or all of these events as well as the APAF symposium on Friday.

Don’t forget our Presidents honours Drinks, on Friday 23rd of March. This event promises to be filled with good food, great conversation and the chance to celebrate the President’s prize winners alongside this year’s Life Fellows. It’s also an opportunity to Thank Bruce Wolfe for his contribution and commitment as QLD president for the last 2 years, and welcome newly appointed President Paul Trotter. You can book your ticket here

This Thursday we are also hosting a welcome drinks for our SONA, student members for 2018. If you would like to join us for a relaxed night welcoming future architects to the Institute and the profession you can register here

Last month we hosted 22 events across QLD which resulted in over 1000 people attending and being involved in the Institute. These numbers show the architecture community is strong and vibrant in Queensland. We are on track to deliver similar results in March with some great events including our 2018 student mentoring program which had 100 students attending the launch night last week. The Chapter is also kicking off its pilot webinar program for 2018 this month and as part of the national strategic plan we are looking at ways to build and grow our advocacy with allied associations, regulators and government. It really is a great year to get involved with the Chapter either through attending events or being on Committees.

As always if you have any feedback or ideas about what members need from the institute to support them as architects, please don’t hesitate to let me know, my email is melissa.greenall@architecture.com.au
