Honouring excellence – 2014 Queensland Architecture Awards

Architects from all over the state have come together in celebration of excellence in good design at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2014 Queensland Architecture Awards announced tonight at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

‘Thoroughly considered and exquisitely detailed’, the University of Queensland’s Advanced Engineering Building (AEB) by Richard Kirk Architect and HASSELL was the big winner of the night, taking home three Named Awards.

Awarding the project the FDG Stanley Award for Public Architecture, the GHM Addison Award for Interior Architecture and the Harry Marks Award for Sustainable Architecture, the jury described the collaborative effort as a ‘significant benchmark in sustainability’.

‘The project provides teaching, research and laboratory facilities either side of a five-storey timber clad, elongated central atrium with a double glazed roof. AEB expertly embraces setting and place and has created an exemplar of engagement with renewable resources and local industry,’ added the jury.

Charles Wright’s ‘extraordinary response to a very personal and adventurous brief’ in the Daintree, Stamp House, was well received by the jury and won the Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New), the top residential award for the night.

‘The concrete fabric chosen for permanence, robustness and thermal mass is placed on a man-made lake and shaped and patterned around its quirky personal spaces to somehow make its other worldly presence take its place in the world’s oldest and most pristine landscape,’ the jury reflected.

Following on from the six Regional Architecture Awards, the state competition resulted in projects across all regions being honoured with the jury presenting 10 Named Awards, 13 Architecture Awards and 13 Commendations in addition to the Queensland Chapter’s Art in Architecture Prize (see below for full list of winners).

Projects that received a Named Award or an Architecture Award now progress to the 2014 National Architecture Awards to be announced in Darwin on 6 November.

It’s all in the detail – Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards announced

Thirty projects from across Brisbane were honoured at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2014 Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards announced tonight at special ceremony held at the Edmund Rice Performing Arts Centre.

Queensland 2014 State Awards Jury Director, Liam Proberts, presented 30 Regional Commendations to projects spanning a range of sizes and purposes, which now progress to the Queensland State Architecture Awards, announced in Brisbane on 20 June

The winners of the John Dalton Award for Building of the Year, House of the Year and an Enduring Architecture Prize were also announced.

The John Dalton Award for Building of the Year went to UQ Advanced Engineering Building by Richard Kirk Architect and HASSELL (Joint Venture) in addition to receiving two Regional Commendations for Public Architecture and Interior Architecture.

‘The UQ Advanced Engineering Building (AEB), a collaboration of Richard Kirk Architect and HASSELL exquisitely embodies a significant benchmark in sustainability within a complex building program of research, teaching and learning. AEB expertly embraces setting and place and has created an exemplar of engagement with renewable resources and local industry.

‘The project provides teaching, research and laboratory facilities either side of a five storey timber clad, elongated central atrium with a double glazed roof. The axis terminates in an expressive timber trussed off-form concrete lecture theatre with the lake setting as backdrop. Thoroughly considered and exquisitely detailed,’ the jury said.

Highgate Hill House by Twofold Studio and Cox Rayner Architects was awarded the Brisbane House of the Year.

‘A sublime piece of architecture, expressed through intricate detailing that is seamlessly engaged with an ironically humble brief. A visceral experience of occupation is manifest through a series of spatially modest but poetically executed rooms. A bespoke, controlled garden and a sequence of outdoor living zones complete the project,’ reported the jury.

The jury nominated and awarded a special Enduring Architecture Prize to AH Job and RP Froud for their 1960 project Torbreck, Queensland’s first multi-storey home unit development.

Winners announced in Sunshine Coast Regional Architecture Awards

Eleven outstanding local projects have been honoured at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2014 Sunshine Coast Regional Architecture Awards, held tonight at Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort and Spa, Noosa.

Twenty-two projects were entered in the Awards with 11 projects (see list below) being awarded Regional Commendations by the jury and progressing to the Queensland Architecture Awards to be announced in Brisbane on 20 June.

In addition to a Regional Commendation, The Beach Box by OGE Group Architects was presented with the Gabriel Poole Award for House of the Year.

‘The utilisation of ‘once used’ shipping containers provides a robust and cost effective opportunity to re-engage with the beach culture and mixed use zoning of Buddina. The grouping provides separate private zones with pop outs for greater internal widths, linking with decks and courtyards and a simple skillion roof over entry referencing modest beach house vernacular. This playful use of containers, engages simple yet appropriate interiors and integration with the landscape. However, its power lies in the way it engages with the street and greater public domain through blurred internal/external and public/private boundaries, street furniture and through its honest and engaging presentation,’ the jury said.

The Post World War 2 Development on the Coast and the Moffat Beach Pilot Study, coordinated by Roger Todd Architect was awarded Regional Project of the Year.

‘It is hoped this unique study and website will alert council, architects, building designers, town planners and the general public to the long term advantages in better conservation of post-World War 2 heritage. It provides inspiration for new works and adaptive reuse and a platform to continue recording built history and heritage,’ the jury said.

A special Enduring Architecture Prize was awarded to Syrenuse, Mooloolaba by Noel Robinson Architects.

‘Syrenuse apartments by Noel Robinson Architects was built in 1981. Its innovative slab and 6 x 6 grid meant the slender structure could provide fire protection while allowing full height glazing and connection to its view and aspect. Its organic form marked Mooloobah as a contemporary destination at the time and it remains a benchmark for mid-high rise development,’ the jury commented.

Mr Andrew Cooksley RAIA

Andrew was educated in Queensland and is currently the Principal of the architectural practice ACArch based on the Sunshine Coast but is constantly shuttling back and forth between Brisbane and the deep blue sea.

He has over two decades experience both here and abroad as an architect and urban designer. His private sector experience has focused on residential, educational and community facilities and he has a solid understanding of planning policy, town centre master planning, infrastructure delivery and development assessment. The recent decade has been invested the public sector initially in local government on the Sunshine Coast and more recently in the state government assisting the Queensland Government Architect.

Much of Andrew’s energy goes into advocating for design and architecture and he is a member of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Urban Design Advisory Panel and the management committee of the public architectural event Brisbane Open House.

He has been active in the Regional Awards programs across the state and he has a strong belief in the value of regional architecture, its operational context/s and the significant contribution of regional practitioners.

Andrew considers the role of the Institute to be critical both as a source of support for practitioners and as the voice of the profession.

Colleagues and Friends

A warm welcome to 2018. Last year saw many changes in your institute that has put us on a much stronger footing both for governance and for long term financial sustainability. The success of the transition to a board with the inclusion of three independent directors has provided confidence and stability for the future.

Here in Queensland we have welcomed our new Executive Director Melissa Greenall along with the continuing excellent support of  Courtney, Madelynn, Joyce and Gemma. We have also fostered a renewed interest of younger graduates in the activities of the AIA as well as strong attendance in a range of on-going successful programs.

Our advocacy with government has been paying dividends with the introduction of the new State Government Procurement Policy and our current work on contracts and non-conforming building products.

We are looking at these strategies to improve the financial reward of our members and the standing of the profession in the industry.

2018 also promises further enhanced member services and improvements in our digital interface.

As you read this I hope you have already cast your votes (Closing date 25.01.17) and are now focused on preparing awards submissions (Closing date 31.01.17)

I encourage you all with your valued projects to participate in this Program, the flagship program of the Institute.

This year particularly there will be

  • Greater public exposure for all projects (including exhibitions & state based publication)
  • Revamped State Architecture Awards Event
  • Reduced workload, the Queensland Chapter will print and mount your boards for the exhibitions ( forms part of the new entry fee)
  • Inaugural Queensland Architecture Awards Regional Roadshow, second half of the year (once State Awards have concluded)

There is a change to the two stage submission to bring Queensland into line with other states but, unique to Queensland, we have maintained our regionally based judging and our commitment of visiting every project.

Looking forward to seeing another year of outstanding projects that is a vital part of advocacy for the profession

Best wishes

Winners of Darling Downs/West Moreton Regional Architecture Awards announced

Four outstanding projects have been honoured at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2014 Darling Downs/West Moreton Regional Architecture Awards, held tonight at Insight Gallery in Toowoomba.

A total of 11 projects including a library, a church, schools, medical and care facilities, and a variety of houses were entered in the Awards with three projects (see list below) being awarded Regional Commendations by the jury and progressing to the Queensland Architecture Awards to be announced in Brisbane on 20 June.

Faith Lutheran College Library by Fulton Trotter Architects took home the William Hodgen Award for Building of the Year.

‘This library addition to the college campus creates a much needed focal point for the school. It lifts the perception of the campus to a higher level. A multi -functional space has been added that connects to the rural landscape and creates a valuable and engaging covered gathering space as well,’ the jury noted.

The Darling Downs/West Moreton House of the Year award went to Thorn by aardvark.

The jury describes the winner as ‘[an] engaging design for a contemporary family home. The use of a creative palette of natural materials, quality finishes and subtle colours has created successful and welcoming interior spaces. CRAB Studio’s Abedian School of Architecture took out the Gold Coast/Northern Rivers Building of the Year.
